What do you regard as being the best way to launch a new website / service?
Soft launch?
Big bang?
Invites?
etcI'm launching a new site in a few weeks and I'm interested and what people think!
cheers

ftp it and cross fingers is my usual approach.
what sort of site is it? it's hard to say without knowing what the site is, folio? big company? flashy new startup etc?

what is the strategic placement for this brand/product in the market? how are you planning on maintaining viewership? are there any other plans for marketing post launch?
these questions (clearly in line before the project was compelted) are what i would look to for making my decision.
and just personally, i hate invites...
- rough0
It's a community site - that's all I can say.
I hate invites also. Not alot of $$ available for marketing so would be relying on search, word of mouth etc
- milo0
add the word beta & only invite a select few?
- digilee0
no ... don't tell me .. it's a social networking site driven by users uploading their videos and inviting their friends to join their friends list commencing with a semi-automatic invite only, beta, soft launch.
did i guess right? do i get an invite?
when will I get unlimited invites?if I am wrong and therefore being very pedantic then I apologise.
if I am right please DO NOT send me an invite as I couldn't care less about it.
- rough0
eh no it's nothing to do with videos...
but back to my question - what do you feel is the best way to launch a new service?
- jamble0
"it's a community site"
does it already have a large community or a large mailing list of people or is it starting from scratch?
is it a global community? if so, party/invites would seem a little pointless.
I stand by ftp + fingers crossed policy until I know more.
- bulletfactory0
how large is the site?
is it brand new? or redesign/dev.i fucking hate seeing "under construction" or "come back soon pages" - because i will never return.
- rough0
it's brand new and will hopefully have global interest..
do press releases work or they largely ignored??
- paraselene0
press has its place. do you have a pr or media agency?
- rough0
No, are they worth the expense?
- paraselene0
well, if you're small, probably not. if you're big, probably so.
you can do your own pr pretty easily. send a release to nma, for example. or campaign or whichever trade journals your industry has.
those things still actually have currency for a lot of people in the industry.
- madirish0
depends on the nature of the site, but they can be for sure.
what is the strategic launch of this brand/serivce in the market?
see the pattern here, dude? :)
- rough0
thanks for the comments, I think we'd be doing our own PR work to be honest..
- Rand0
own pr work = PBS?
- Crouwel0
there's only one place for that..
chompchomp!

shy kids get no sweets.
Approach a ton of different people about prizes for a competition, then post a competition that has a decent prize.
1000s of visitors overnight.
