If I got a Mini DVI - DVI adapter from Apple. Then got a Monster DVI - HDMI cable connected to i, could I effectivley use my HD TV as a second monitor?

Possible yes but not a great solution. I hook my MacBook Pro up to my Sony HDTV to watch my region 2 DVDs and I can't get a useable resolution that won't cut off the top and bottom of the picture. Mind you, most of my PS3 screen is cropped too so maybe that's just the TV.

Is the resolution on the HD TV good though? Compared to hooking the MacBook Pro up to a HD 23" or 30" apple cinema display?

I've never actually hooked mine up to a Cinema Display but I think the main difference would be in the dot pitch of the HDTV compared to the Cinema Displays. HDTV. I'd say an HDTV has the same quality as a Cinema Display roughly half it's size. I guess there'd be a certain amount of blurring by upscaling the lower resolutions to the displays too.

Put simply I'd probably only hook mine up to an HDTV for viewing video or for presentation work.

(Jun 29 07, 21:34)Pixel shift. Now I know what it's called. My Macbook Pro and PS3 both suffer from it when connected to the TV.
Sounds like a band, hehe.

you could try software display configx which overides the standard res and lets you control pixel shift.

HD TV is great for presenting stuff 'big'... but the resolution is lower than the Macbook screen.. (1080? vs 1280x800)
