I just got an offer to work at a pretty decent place. It's an entry level job- pays 42K
it would be a 2 hr commute for 6 months till I could move, then it'd be an hour commute.
I'm kinda hard up for a job...am I crazy to consider this one?

It's plum wrong to drive over an hour to work - not only because of the amount of your life you'd be wasting in a stifling stressful environment - but also because of the amount of pollution you'd be emitting.
What's the point of me making concessions in my own life (sold my car, only have a bike - attempts to reduce air travel etc) if other people thoughtlessly increase their emissions for the sake of some misguided sense of comfort?

nah man it's a train commute puts me 2 blocks from the place... that train is runnin wether i"m on it or not
and i kinda need a sense of security, i got a kid on the way

actually, my comment isn't as relevant here - you NEED the job, and maybe you aren't driving.
soz.

Oops.. lol.

2 hours each way? or round Trip.
- Nairn0
heh, i'm such a twat.
do what you've got to do, man and ignore this eedjit in his ivory tower in London. Your kid's the most important thing. if it's just 'til you move, it's a worthwhile sacrifice.
peace.

all that aside you shouldn't compromise your own beliefs, even if the rest of the world is against you.
always easier said than done

2 hrs one way...I think i can handle that for 6 months.

4 hours a day?
*winces
What on Earth happened to our utopian visions of paper-free offices, telecommuting and working from beaches in Hawaii?
Life? I want my money back.

i commuted 2 hours for a crap job up the NJ Parkway. Probably should have been only an hour, but traffic was awful. Take it if you need it ... my 2ยข. (congrats on the kid)

2 hours!? hell no! that is much too long (and if you are driving, think of how much you will be spending in gas alone!)
break it down like this:
42k divide that into hourly pay is about $20/hour (and that is only assuming you will be working 40 hours a week...not likely if you are in creative)...then add 4 hours a day (2 there 2 back) x 6 months=480 hours of drive time+240 miles per day (driving 60mph)*$3.00 per gallon of gas=hell no!is there nothing closer? i mean...something has to be more reasonable.

(Jun 28 07, 18:45)It's actually a blessing in disguise.
Bring along a book. Killer way to get the brain going in the am, and an equally great way to wind down after work.
And it will blow you away how many books you whizz through in that 6 months.
Seriously.

hey two-zero, thats weird this place is in north jersey, and if I drove it would be the parkway.
How did you not kill yourself, sitting in all that traffic? I'm gonna take a train and my MBP, but I'm pretty sure I could never, do a two hr commute on the pkwy!
- two-zero0
i agree with jeffrey, i wish i was on a train. it would have been nice to sit back with a book. 6 months isn't bad.

i took much too long to write my above response!
i started writing that when there was only one response to the thread! so probably disregard everyting i said.

it was only 6 months then i was moving and leaving, so it wasn't bad. sports radio and tons of Cds kept me going ... wish i had an iPod then. wouldn't happen to be in Paramus would it?

I used to do 1.5-2 hours EACH WAY working for the Washington Times newspaper for 4 years. And I DROVE and it was ONLY about 28 miles each way.
& they paid a lot less than 41K...
oh. looking at your work... you should easily be making way more than what they are offering.
for 6 months? you can do it... you're doing it for a family... do it, that's what men do.. sacrifice.

my thoughts exactly jeffrey, I got a reading list compilation going on...I jumped the gun and started one that I was really interested in. Flight by sherman alexie, pretty good so far.

609 to 973 commute is brutal ... but on a train, different story. good luck with whatever you decide.
