How lenient are they with replacing an item, like say I were to break it or I left the window open and it got soaked, would they just replace the unit if they can't fix it?

any time it shows signs of water damage, i think they won't replace it. basically anything that looks like you caused the problem.

if you did it - they won't cover it (unless you know a good service tech and/or pay one off)

Probably not if they opened it up and saw water damage.
I once sent in my ipod because it was freezing more than most and disk mode was behaving erratically and they sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it. This was when it was under warrantee.
I know someone who did the same thing, sent his ipod in, they sent it back, he sent it back, etc.. and eventually they just sent him a new one. I wish I had known about that whenthey sent mine back.

Ok good to know. I left a window open yesterday during a thunderstorm. Came home to a Mac dripping water but still running. I took it apart and there was no water inside. All seems fine. I guess if anything were to happen like that I would just put in an insurance claim

on a side note..
Lots of computer hardware service facilities I've been to and knew people who worked there had taser-like or even taser-based devices used for killing electronics.. They used these to ensure no supplier would attempt to repair ie. a faulty hard drive, but inevitably replace it with a new one

Homeowners or renters insurance usually covers water damage and negligence.

so what if I drop my macbook pro to the floor and there is a bump on the corner?> does warranty still cover it?
