death or a racist or death of a funny comedian?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/enter…
whats people think?
im kinda on the fence, sometimes he was funny and i can rememmber him being on saturday night tv a lot when i was younger and being funny but yeah some of his stuff was a bit OTT on the racist front.
Frank Carson was on the Tv this morning answering back to the crit that Bernard was getting, asking howcome its funny for coloured people or people from minorities/religions can take the piss out of THEMSELVES but others cant - he even saying that the irish were the butt of their own jokes.
has political correctness and stuff like that gone too far so we cant even have a laugh?
there was some comedian reality show on last night, US based and there was a black dude taking the piss out of blacks, a jew taking the piss out of jews, it goes on and on.
anyhoo, thought id spark off a debate ...

coincidently mal posted something about mark e smith yesterday
anyway mes on bernard manning
CM: What makes you laugh?
MES: Bernard Manning makes me laugh.
CM: Are you being serious about Bernard Manning or are you being amazingly sarcastic?
MES: No, I think he's funny. He can tell jokes, y'know.
CM: Yeah, but I mean his views are absolutely appalling.
MES: Appalling?
CM: Yes, the stance that he takes on women... absolutely appalling.
MES: Well, I haven't noticed.
CM: He's an amazing misogynist.
MES: Is he?
[Clip of Bernard Manning in performance.]
MES: It's good to have a laugh at things like that.
CM: Yes, but don't you thnk there's something more dangerous and insidious than that?
MES: What he's say is laugh it off. If you live in that part of Manchester you never even see a woman. You know, why doesn't Ben Elton tell any racist or sexist jokes?
CM: Because he knows it's a dangerous thing.
MES: No, because he doesn't fucking know any!
CM: I'm sure if he wanted to he could buy a book.
MES: Yeah you tell me something funny Ben Elton said, I'll give you a thousand pounds.

it's a worthy debate (whether racism etc can be/is funny), but I'm afraid that bigotted fool is not worth the recognition - his comedy was acceptable at a time when bigotry was still seen as acceptable, when fear of other cultures bred hatred, which in turn bred his contrived 'set piece' jokes.
I'd have liked to have seen him ad-lib. I'm sure the only funny thing would have been how appallingly bad the routine was.

I saw him at his club, quite funny really.
Its a generational thing. My Gran who's 85 from Liverpool, is stupifyingly racist, but she grew up in a time where there were no people of any colour other than white, lived through a second world war etc etc blah blah.
I went to see a comidian last week who couldnt stop laying into the Polish etc, so I think ther's a new breed of racist comedy happening.
comedy at its best reflects what society is thinking. Manning represented an awful lot of Britain in the 70's and 80's, people moved on, he didnt as he was making a living from it.
Fuck me the guy was huge in america too, filled out vegas casinos, the only people who could do that now are Eddie Izzard etc. So in his day he was very popular.
It became wrong to laugh at those jokes. But at the end of the day, just a bloke cracking a few jokes.
I went to a Manchester cricket club dinner, where everyone was white apart from one black guy, and he did lay into him, but no one laughed.
As an aside he was in my sweepstake " who will dies this year". I won £20 quid yesterday.
good on ya' Bernard

He fell out of fashion - out of the times. He should've started on the middle east and Asians - it's far more fashionable than picking on blacks these days.

I agree with moth's comments.
While I am guilty of finding very controversial topics/issues funny in a comedy context, Bernard came across as ignorant, insular and bitter.
To me he was the personification of a cliché.
I don't doubt he was a lovely bloke, just not a fan of his humour.

His jokes and routine were hugely dated but as was mentioned, it's very much a generational thing.

if we laugh at bernard manning we can't beat the shit out of the BNP.
whatever about the generational issue, we shouldn't give a platform to racists.
