Does anyone else think that this little whirlwind of joepublic/media outrage is slightly depressing.. I mean haven't we got beyond the whole 'my 5 year old daughter could draw that' attitude?
We're being bombarded with silly news items of people sending in 'my first logo' and then newscasters glowing with pride at the endless union jack/london eye/tube map car crashes.
Surely we should be applauding that someone's had a little guts for once, and not produced a dour, and inspid cookie cutter 'this is a sports event' logo, and then picked up their cheque.
The whole thing surely has a lot of potential.

agreed
i feel its good for purpose but still an ugly logo.
its more interesting and thought provoking than the usual black/red/green/yellow/blue logo we get every 4 years.
maybe it will start a olympic logo trend.
but i still find it hard to get past the ugliness.

(Jun 6 07, 04:48)come on ffs, not ugly is first on the list of objectives surely - it doesn't matter how much its intellectualised after the fact if it looks like shit in the first place.

The lack of imagination from the British public is soul destroying. It's incredibly pernicious. Someone takes a chance and tries to push the boat out and people would rather moan.

Kelpie - surely though it's a part of quite an interesting potential visual system. When you see the logo on it's own, sat there all naked on the BBC site, it looks a bit awkward, and some would definitely find it ugly.
The more I think about it though, the more I could see them having a lot of room to push it. It certainly has a certain attitude.

do the British love to moan? YES
is the London 2012 logo ugly? YES
are the British public moaning? YES
ticks all the boxes then, no?
- kelpie0
lol@lack of imagination.
nice first two posts ever, btw.
What are the public meant to imagine here? that the brand looks totally different than it does? that they are pleased with how it represents their Olympic games? that all is rosy in the garden?
how fucking presumptuous can you get? Credit people with some taste and intelligence.

(Jun 6 07, 04:55)of course it is, but im not justifying the way it looks. Im still getting over the fact this is gonna be plastered all over London.

Look (and I'm going to stop ranting about this after this, cos I reckon I must be boring the crap out of everybody ;) ) I'm not in any way against the concept that it can be developed, that's good, that it is being pitched as 'democratic' and 'inclusive'; great, different from the past, ok cool. But saying these things does not make the fact that the thing is pretty rank any better, new does not equal good. All the noble aims of the project could have been explored and reflected in something much more appropriate, something that doesn't look like a bad scamp for the new Erol Alkan poster.
I've hit a bad rant-wave now, I really should shut up, but surely you can see my point? I can see the other argument from a lot of angles myself, it almost makes it more dissapointing, like they got caught up in those aspects of the job and forgot about the basic requirements.
peace to all, I'm off to dunk my head in some cold water.

If China had produced this logo somebody would surely have been shot.

@Wolf Olins, are they shitting bricks or laughing their hoots off?
be interesting to know

Love it or hate it, it's going to make selling 'challenging' ideas to clients a bit tougher.
And then we'll all end up moaing about doing dull safe work in PMS Reflex Blue.
I like the idea, not a fan of the execution, but at least its different.

is it true the video got pulled because people have been having fits?
They should pull the logo while they're at it....

Precisely!Another 'new' and fresh thinking gets slammed because he joined recently.
How uncool is that?
Well, perhaps all of you regular residents here are just wasting your time with stupid posts as it they seem by reading through the majority of the subjects discussed here.

don't make me kill this thread and end all discussion, 'cause I will...
