there is a responsibility in designing an identity for such an event, a responsibility that was clearly ignored. In house here, the statement is "It's not about what the client wants, it's about what their customers want"
To put an entire planet on edge with a mark whose intent is to celebrate an event that represents unity is irresponsible and selfish

i think you might have 'pop art' and making something 'pop' a little mixed up.
"A style of painting and sculpture that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, in Britain and the United States; based on the visual cliches, subject matter, and impersonal style of popular mass-media imagery."
pop as in popular. much like pop music.
making something pop, in terms of marketing drivel is to lift something off the page, give it contrast, definition.
and at no point has making something pop been a fundamental of art and design.

Roses appear red...
Violets seem blue...
Your appearance is that of a Monkey...
... and your emanating scent is too.... I think that's 'e-prime'... according to the wikipedia reference at least...

"... and your emanating scent , i feel to also be similar to that of an unwashed simian" even.

UE...so nice.
And I love how they are saying this mark can easily be used in a interactive / motion environment.
That can be done with just about any logo, if it is in the right hands.

Don't forget that there's still 5 more years of brand development to go, Tank. There's still plenty of time for the brand to bosh DMT & Acid and pick up yet more lurid hues and eye-fuck jaggedness.
Plen-ty of time.

in 2009 the logo transforms!!
get ya glowsticks out

nobody is going to want lurid in 5 years time. no matter how nicely it moves about.
it's already looking tired.
and UE's work is nice, but there is no way they would have the capacity to handle a brand this big. one of the big boys has to get this account just on numbers alone.

i see your point skt.
But thats what we have been debating in school and theres another idea to the pop thing.
I was mentioning pop as an art technique used to purposefully make an element stand out.
For example, when compared to his contemporaries Warhol's POP style was loud, minimal and repetitive. Line up a bunch of artwork in different styles and Warhol's will jump at you more.
In music the Pop style borrowed from this formula by using minimal , and brighter compositions and catchier hooks. Again if you let someone hear a classical song, a blues song and a pop song the pop song will always appeal to the simplest of senses and will be the more pleasing piece in the shorter term.
Why do pop songs sound good the first time you hear them? Cause they pop.
Even if they might not have any real depth to them.In design if you want to make something pop, have the be minimal and loud. A red over black will pop more than a dark grey over black.
Fundamentals of pop.

yo def.
you mixin' up art with design.
design is about creative communication and setting up a strong brand.

your teachers need to teach you a little better.
in both music and art it is drawn from popular mass culture. "Pop"-ular"

handy tools to learn about design,
not art
- defanddumm0
tank, we were talking about something popping and where that came from.
Thanks for your definition of design, i agree with it.
