aritzia.com eh.

that's another thing – people who win awards likely think they're good when in all probability they're probably shite !

Like any form of criticism and scrutiny, it all depends on what it means to you..
I won an Applied Arts gold for a website this year that I designed, but I hate it, even before it went into development it was one of the weakest concepts presented, I also imagine there were way better sites out there that either didn't bother entering, or was selected purely on the basis that it came from that studio in particular.. percentage of Canadian content, etc..
Either way, it's not that good and really did not deserve to win..

I didn't even know I was entered for the D&AD award I won last year - the agency I did the illustrations for entered the competition.
I opened the mail one day and there's this big envelope with this poster inside. I had no clue, as usual.
From Bruce Mau's Incomplete Manifesto:
"26. Don’t enter awards competitions. Just don’t. It’s not good for you."It's taken me years of rejection from Comm Arts to finally get this.

I think the professional D&AD awards are a bit of a clique thing. It's always the same companies, but then, the work in the annual is consistently good.
In terms of paying for entry, D&AD is a non-profit organisation. All the money they make goes into design education. They get the best designers to be judges at their awards – creative directors from all around the world, sagmeister etc. It's only fair to have the most informed judges, these people can't take a few days off work for nothing, plus there's all the production and publishing costs, and they sponsored as well.
Overall I think they're a good idea, they shouldn't drive all work and be the 'be all and end all' but if they help motivate people to produce excellent creative work, then why not.

missed the student bit, thought this was about the regular D&AD awards...

the really good stuff never wins awards though, in my opinion the values they 'recognise' aren't the ones that really matter.
this is a mainly a question of taste, but i still think student awards don't do any real good, they seem to just push everybody in the same direction.

people paying money for it is a different matter.
All I am saying is that having an awards is a good thing and drives people to produce design work that is original and successful. Having said that less and less awards have been given out recently

a student award is a popularity contest??? come on. In terms of the industry you are saying that work that has won awards was not good or better than the rest?
In the uk the DBA do a design effectiveness award as well
- r_mutt0
awards are simply toxic, and paying money to enter this kind of contest is completely retarded, especially as a student.
"r_mutt = obviously frustrated at not being recognised how great a designer he/she is."

how simple this is !
- neue75_bold0
dude, they're popularity contests, good for business but don't think they mean you've made something brilliant...
The Effie awards are really the only ones that measure effectiveness of your work, thus lack subjective back-slapping...

hahaah u bastards :) :)
show the boy some love :P
just for the award that he won, there were 1000+ ppl that didnt get it, which puts into prespective..
personally i dont like the thought of these kinda awards (D&AD, YCN etc) it make me feel like... "go on boy, do a trick, go on.. yeaaah... heres a biscuit"
I would do this in my spare time were i to be working behind a bar, or in a McD - i dont need a carrot to make me wanna explore :)
but nevertheless.. very well done to you & ur girl :)

r_mutt = obviously frustrated at not being recognised how great a designer he/she is.
To be honest though what is wrong with gaining an award for work you have done. Yes it may amount to nothing but at least you gain recognition for all the hard work you put it. Most of the time clients hardly notice how long you have spent deisgning their fucking DM piece :|

I'm just a squirrel trying to get a nut!

i think my knee just jerked, sorry!

awards are great, its like a carrot for the creative industry to push themselves forward. Also, in our industry its rare to get any significal recognition from non-designers so we have to make it ourself. The army have medals, etc. D&AD are UK based, but international.
-a carrot, just what the so-called creative industry needs! pushing each other forward by making work to win awards over each other, great! i think that us designers a bit like the army too, but instead of fighting for 'freedom' we fight for the poor defenseless corporation! this type of work deserves recognition!
- neue75_bold0
or maybe you deserve a pat on the back from a non-designer and a kick in the teeth from your peers?
- Eiv0
Baskerville, you're right bout that, for good and bad:)
Olselpaso, thanks! I somehow I think its not real and I'm really just mentally ill, imagining things. Fingers crossed..
