you did the site design for icon accessories???
i love that site!!
well more for the product than the site as i am a product accessory designer, but i always foound the functionality of that site very very nice!!i love how the products are layered in a row by row movement and the 360 features are so cool, perhaps i should have you make a site for me aand my mecha designs.
would be fun and nice.

I did not design the current site. I like it alot, and have professed this to many people, but the brand does not. They get alot of negative user feedback from customers. I say, "You'll get that with an industry standard setting site." I was asked to redesign with a more usable site in mind as well as being more succinct with their printed catalog. BTW, thanks for the constructive criticism SKT.

hows this then?
"2000 called, wants its site design back"
any better?
is there ANY structure to that page at all? I can't see any. It all just looks very dated and thrown togethor. sorry, but like I said, don't really blame your boss.
- skt0
but yes, it sucks when stuff you have worked hard on doesn't get used.
- tyranisus0
Yeah, that's better. I'd argue that there is structure to the page. The menu is permanently fixed in that location, all the nodes it creates (like the dealer locator there) appear in the same position. It's meant to feel less structured and more organic while also being easier to navigate -

Your boss just needs to be asked the right questions so you can both walk through the issues together.
You mentioned something "more usable" - I feel the old site was more usable for one reason in particular... your nav looks out of place/lost. On the old site it was dead obvious. Your site the nav looks like it's a sub-nav of the close section. Hope this helps.
ps. That horizontally stretched type looks a little accidental, if that's part of their brand then that sux.

ok tyranisus..
im with skt on this... its abit all over the place..
anchoring ur menu down doesnt imply structure..
the three typefaces font really harmonise,
the crosses seem superfluous.. (not in a gd way- more like .. "yeaaah i'm Kerrazzzy with 3 Z's") they are also far too chunky to be supporting graphics.. they attract oo much attention. rather than just filling in as decoration
the hierarchy is totally messed up
1 the menu is on the right (and since we read left to right... ur gonna have to emphasise the menu a bitmore.. to stand out from all the other stuff around it.)
2 the close button has more emphasis than the menu.. (bit negative no?)
3 the 'close cross' is too chunky
4the logo is awkwardly floatingalso the nothing is aligned with nothing.. [structure] besides the little boxes on the right being retrospectively aligned to the main display
main display is also awkwardly off center
also the best bit is the media player up top.. but thats gimmicks that u attach when the core is established.. it looks like u put effort into that.. and then thought .."fuck it" and threw the site together
and lastly its sadly all about web 2.0 - round shiny or at the very least smooth...
that is not organic!! sharp edges 45&90 degree angles = mechanised!! [see "BionicSystems"] {probably what skt mean by 2000 style site]
hope it helps

their current site is fine by me.
- oldelpaso0
oh dear.. spelling has gone out of the window...
"typefaces DONT really harmonize.."
"also nothing is aligned with nothing.. [the structure] besides the little boxes on the right being retrospectively(?) aligned to the main display"

"what the brand had in mind"
what is "brand" in this context?
is it a living thing? a person even?
is it alive?
if so you accomplished a historical leap in the evolution of both genetic engineering and brand technology.
well done.
- oldelpaso0
is their current site the NEW site???
thats pretty swish..i like it a lot!
i swear i just saw it on one of those FWA type sites not so long ago!
- morilla0
I think that is their old site and they are want something more "user friendly" from what I gather in the ealier posts.
But, I think it is pretty friendly right now. There are some small things that could be changed but overall it's cool. They should keep it.

old site: www.rideicon.com
1 of my designs: www.imgdumb.com/images... [jpg]
brand really likes: www.useit.com
tyranisus
(May 21 07, 08:52)maybe you need to apply a solid grid structure and get some more fitting type for it all. i don't see much improvement between exhibit a and exhibit b.
sorry.
- oldelpaso0
a site with NOTHING???
- morilla0
It would look alot nicer if they just ripped out all that grungy treaments at the top and just have it straight black and clean.
- tyranisus0
oldelpaso - thanks! seriously I appreciate the feedback. I guess . . . well conceptually I feel I'm onto something, but to be perfectly honest I am not crazy about the nav being located where it is - and it does force the main content area to be off-center - fonts: the main menu is flatiron and is ulaltered - personally I love that typeface. Other than that is univers condensed bold -
I also love the music player the most - I wanted it to be as minimal as possible.
Icon is . . . a crazy brand. I like the "crazy with three zzz's" thing - that's actually a very accurate description of the brand identity.
Anyway, thanks again everyone - I appreciate it!
