Is it a good place to live in as a designer etc... ?
- neue75_bold0
no.. not professionally/creatively, but it's a wonderful city otherwise...

Had to be better than Shithole Glasgow, innt?

It's okay. It's more likely that you'll never be bored.

I would move south or east, not west if I was you

im from toronto and i am an unemployed designer and flash animator..

East as in Vancouver?
I've got some family over in Toronto, thought maybe they'd support me if i move over there... Thats why i need to find out if it's ideal for a designer

I had to move from the damned city before I started to become a loose and playful designer, judging things by eye and designing by 'a feeling'...

I went over last November and had meetings with 17 agencies. Some good, some... not so good. The very good one (judging by rep - Hahn Smith for one) wouldn't even see me.
Nice city though. Friendly people, lot of stuff to do. I would work there if somebody would offer me a job.
Anyone? Anyone?

I used to think HS were hot shit, but re-looking at their portfolio again, I don't know what I was sinking...
Concrete's new work seems more promising... in the sense of returning to the great work they were known to produce 5+ years ago...
Underline is probably the top studio in my eyes over there now...
- JerseyRaindog0
Concrete were one of the better ones that's for sure. Underline do great work. And they were cool people to talk to. But too small to take people on.
- neue75_bold0
yep...
but maybe in a year or so I could see them needing some support, but probably only juniors..
tis the sad case with most cities, the good studio's consist of 2-3 people...

(May 15 07, 04:25)no as in Berlin, Amsterdam, etc. or south as in London. Not west as in US or Canada.

i really love it here in toronto.
as for work, ive never had a hard time finding it. but you have to work hard, as there are 45,000 people looking for your job.lots to do.
- exador10
moving to a new city and looking for work is always a tough thing to do...definitely helps if you have some family here to help cushion the landing so to speak...
as for work, there's lots to be had here, but as you've heard from jerseyraindog and the others, it can be a bit tricky finding the right fit...
as a junior you can find lots of places that are willing to take you on, but you won't be payed big bucks, thats for sure...
you can find jobs and work at the other end of the spectrum as well, but like anything, it's not easy....
as for just in general, i've had assloads of design gigs here in toronto over the years, some awesome, some not so great, but i've never really lacked for work..
and the nightlife is pretty excellent...
'specially college st. (imho)
college and clinton area...awesome bars and cafes at night...

-i would say it is not an obvious creative 'hot bed', but i believe you can find the stimulation if you so desire it.
- r_mutt0
amsterdam is the warmest, but not the hottest bed there is to be had.
