(May 14 07, 14:42)Maya. No really, Maya.
However, C4D is awesome for the price.

I tried learning Maya a few years ago and I'm convinced that if you're going to get any good, you'll have to be using it almost everyday. It's not a casual undertaking.
If you're on a Mac, 3D Studio Max is a no go.

I used Maya when I was in school...
I would suggest it for group projects only...
Modeler, Painter, Programmer, etc.
Very heavy for one user. C4D is perfect for a fast turn around too.

I have to agree about maya. I wouldn't suggest maya for anything other than full scale productions where you have programmers taking advantage of it's api's and making new tools and stuff etc etc and a full team of people working with you on all the different elements.

does anyone know if you can create smoke effects with c4d?
i researched and couldn't find anything on it and so that's probably where Maya comes in handy. C4D is really fun to use but takes a while just like any 3D app to get great at. I am still learning every day. You should download the trial version. Have to agree with the XSI comment too. Check that out as well.

well 3d max has been running shit for about 10 years now and it even bought out maya! so if your looking for the real deal go with autodesk max. why dick around with 3d on a mac?? cinema? please? why not just call it zbrush?
- cacoe0
zBrush is an excelent compliment to other 3D packages if you're in the realm of character design, why are you even comparing it? Its more of a suppliment than an alternative...

You should download the trial version.

(May 14 07, 18:08)Actually a great suggestion. Download demos of each and see what you seem to take to best. Max, Maya and C4D all have trial versions.
We have a MAX dude and Maya dude at work. They both do excellent work and I attribute it to them as artists, and not the tools really. It just takes time!

C4D here,
Kind depends on what kind of modeller you are though, I mainly use polygon tools and surface subdivision, I didnt really ever get into spline modelling. Has its uses though.
I have found C4D pretty good although its been a while since I upgraded.

As far as 3D for mac goes and it's integration into AE I have to say Cinema 4D is really pretty good. Max is PC only but he's right it is really good just like Maya just like XSI. Just tools though but you will be up and running probably faster than with C4D. I wish they had trial versions 5 years ago so consider yourself priveleged. Good Luck and have fun.

For anyone at the beginner level, or maybe looking for something relatively cheap you could look at Cheetah3D (mac only), it's well reviewed and was 2nd only to Modo at the 2006 MacUser awards.

My old art professor has an excellent Cinema 4d book coming out next month. it's the second edition. check her out at annepowers.com or http://www.amazon.com/Cinema-4D-…

Thanks for all of the helpful info, guys.
And I'll check that book out, Eric. Thanks. It should be noted, however, that the cover may yield Anne and/or Focal Press a smack in the face on principle alone. This is my shot across their bow, Anne/FP. Further grossgusting design choices will be considered an unignorable act of aggression and shall be dealt with accordingly (see: re: face smacks).
