Any suggestions? I know apple claims the file system defragments itself, but this isn't really true and I know OSX can get a noticeable boost by defragmenting..

why isn't this "really true"?

I encountered it myself: sometimes the system won't let you create bootcamp partition because the drive isn't integral. This means, the files are spread around the whole drive, despite it having enough space for a new partition.
I read a thread on this on a forum (in Polish), people explained that only accessed files got defragmented automatically, they also have to be below 20mb of size.
http://macslash.org/article.pl?s…They also suggested some software that ie. shortened OS startup by 1/3.
One was http://www.coriolis-systems.com/…
another one..

the files aren't necessarily fragmented, it's just that not all used space is contiguous

I recommend iDefrag
Our VP Technology and general 'seems to know everything' recommended it to me. I researched and found it to be the best option
It gives a visual of blocks and space allocation, consolidates and defrags in varying intensity depending how serious your problem is (different modes)
I ran the simple "online" mode and cleared 3gb of space and the segmenting appears much more organized

I second iDefrag. It works great. Yes your Mac drive can become defragmented over time also, but the Mac OS does a good job of not letting it get too out of hand. iDefrag really helps though.
