How do you create a transparent gradient in Illustrator CS2.
I ned to create one going from red to transparent, but all I can end it with is white.
Any suggestions?

Is there not an alpha slider in the colour window?

Illustrator can't do alpha in its gradient. Try using red to white and setting the transparency mode to color.

You'll need to create a transparency mask. Create a box with the color you want in the gradient. Keep it selected and then pull up the Transparency Palette, click on the dropdown arrow in the corner, and select create Opacity Mask. Click on the black mask representation square in the transparency palette. Then you can create a black to white gradient box as the mask. Does this make sense?
