If family/ friends really care then they'll contact me/ i'll contact them. I don't need to post all my personal details online for everyone to see/ hack/ steal/ laugh at etc.
It may be because I am old but I just don't see the point.
My private life is my private life.

I agree with you to some extent.
Unfortunately, many people don't actually make the first move to contact me, and the same thing happens to them nowadays as well. It's one big chain. It's hard to explain. Kind of like not being alone but being lonely.

here's an idea. use it and be creative with it. you don't have to post all your personal details in such an earnest fashion if that makes you feel strange. if you're worried about people "hacking, stealing or laughing" at your personal details then don't reveal anything you wouldn't want all your friends knowing. And better still, how about using it as a template (an admittedly sub-par template) to create something interesting...
come on! you're 'designers' - be creative with it! be poetic, comedic, stupid, whatever... curate a slice of your life for people to see. and you can control who sees it. or create a new personality with it....
whatever you do stop bitching about stupid things.
end rant...

nice rant :)

having said that...
i second canuck and madirish's sentiments...
i shit on facebook. facebook sucks - fuck it!
i wonder if just saying that here, will devalue it enough as a web property to ensure, that whoever owns it doesn't make a fuckin' shit load selling it to some multinational scumbag corporation.

It will happen soon.
As I mentioned before, within the past year they've changed FB a lot. Now it's available to pretty much anyone (previously it was primarily available to university and college students, and there are new apps and capabilities now, which only make the site worse. I wouldn't be surprised if templates or something were next.

FB is nothing like Myspace.
I use it to keep up to date with what my family are doing on the other side of the world
plus
I have got work out of FB
and have met up with a few old designer mates from uni – V.interestingYou can use it for what you want. I know its the cool thing to do but don't hate on it just because everyone talks about it and it's popular

A friend got me to sign up a few days ago, and I was amazed that everyone has it but me.

i use facebook for keeping in touch with friends and family and chatting to them.
i use myspace for talking to some 'real' friends but mostly just general banter with folk i've met on myspace.
and i use NT for spouting even more crap than i do on those two put together
lol

Hate Facebook. In my experience, it ruins relationships...people aren't careful enough about what they're putting out there.
