You see, Leigh, the question I'm really getting at is this:
Do the people who employ YOU have degrees?
My guess is yes, AND shit hot portfolios.
Degrees are overated until that moment in your career that you can't get much further without one, and people with them and the same great portfolio are passing you by because they have THAT MUCH MORE TO OFFER.
I don't mean "you" in particular, rather everyone in such a position.

right on mg33. i don't think anyone can argue that you can get your foot in the door w/a shit hot portfolio and no degree, and do stellar work for a long time. but what happens after 5, 10 or more years when you want to grow into those positions? you may or may not be fuct...so having that degree may help.
plus some places require them...it's stupid, but when you need a job you need all the advantages you can get.

The BS degree I hold will take me a lot further in life...

It's your Portfolio at the end of the day.
Look at it like this..
Do you employ a designer with a BA and an ok portfolio .
or do you employ someone with shit hot portfolio and no BA.
Degrees are overated!

(Apr 4 07, 09:06)Your argument doesn't make sense because there are other things, as mg33 mentioned, you have to consider when hiring someone.

I can pretty much guarantee that 90% of Principles and Creative Directors have degrees.

I'd settle for someone who has a hot portfolio AND a degree. Depending on the position and how much of a rush I'm in to hire someone.

-----------------------------Exactly what I figured.

I never graduated, yet won the award for outstanding creativity in my final year, took a paid internship that within a year lead to a senior position and have worked in a couple of the top design studio's in their respective countries... so yes, if your good, it really doesn't matter, what matters is how clever you are and how well you can apply it and of course, your experience/track record as you get on in years...

of course there is an exception to the rule, just as in everything.
It's just how it works.

I can put it this way.
If I am hiring a designer and I have 2 with shit hot portfolios ( can't believe I just said shit hot, paris hilton alarms are going off)
and one designer never went to school and the other graduated with a degree from Pratt (or wherever)....who do you think I would pick? No contest, degrees always trump the lesser.

ok, back to the architecture subject. Let's meet Jimmy, he just graduated from high school and has an incredible portfolio with prints and ideas that architecture has never seen before. He is the hottest thing in NTville. He gets a contract from the hottest architecture firm in town and makes loads of money from the getgo. Now, if Jimmy never went to school to learn which materials to use or not to use, which formulas work or not how is he gonna rank in 2 years when the bubble bursts?
Same thing with interior design, fashion, etc...*hopes tale makes sense...
- neue75_bold0
Jimmy will learn along the way and nobody will ever let Jimmy make those decisions until Jimmy is capable to make them...

can't be bothered to read the thread. and i'm sure it has been mentioned before, but...
if you ever want a visa for a foreign country, most of them require a degree. so if for nothing else, it's worth it for that alone.
- OSFA0
exactly, and who's gonna teach Jimmy if there are no instructors around? His mates who did went to school and know their shit. So he weill be treated as the kid that got talent but no idea what he's doing and be assigned to a tiny desk on the corner.
( and yes, I know you can learn based on experience but I decided to ommit that to get my point accross :)
- blaw0
lol @ did went to school.
- OSFA0
shit. that's the only class I did skipped.
