I used to work at IKEA for a few months once. Their product is crap unless u spend the big bucks.
Rough fabrics. Pressed wood. all garbage.
Kitchen stuff ain't bad though.

I would stay away from sofas at ikea. Their strong suit is shelving, organization, kitchen, nick-nacks, office, etc.
Check out Room and Board.

$1000 for a couch from IKEA? I say no. IKEA is good for cheap stuff that you will be switching in couple of years or less.

i wouldn't buy a couch from ikea.
the ones i've sat on in the store seemed really cheap. the cloth didn't seem to fit well and they didn't seem like they'd hold up to heavy traffic. my wife and her old rommie had one when we first met and it was like sitting on a pile of bricks.
if you have the money to spend, shop around to other stores and pay a bit more. if you're on a tight budget don't shop online, if you can go to the store and sit on em to test them out.
anything else but furniture i'd buy from ikea.
i have some stuff from west elm that has held up like shit. edges are cracking off and the wood is chipping. the ikea stuff (desk, coffee table, bookshelves, cases, tv stand) has been bullet proof thus far. i love their shit, and we just had a new store open a few miles away. yahoo!

tyranisus.
if you're looking for ideas to fill your room pick up (or ask to receive) an ikea catalog and a west elm catalog. but do NOT buy from west elm. i have been very unhappy with the stuff i've purchased from there.
west elm has some really great ideas on room layouts and storage (as does ikea) and you can get some ideas as to what to look for and do from there.

Yeah, don't buy a couch from Ikea, there real cheap. I've done it twice and there not exactly cheap in price either.
A lot of Ikea's other stuff is good though, and there prices are cheap.
I bought my couch from Ethan Allen. Some of there couch collections are REALLY expensive. But...they also have sets that are A LOT cheaper, the quality is also what you'd expect from Ethan Allen as well for these sets. I think the collection I bought was called South Beach or something like that and I paid $1100 per couch. Real ultra modern looking, clean + simple design, the couch is super comfortable and the leather is super soft and heavy duty. The more you scratch it, the better is looks too. Check into this set, it may be what you're looking for.

DUDE - Save yourself the heartache and stay away from IKEA furniture. There are very few exceptions to the rule that they manufacturer disposable furniture.
For a grand you have a lot of couch options. Bear in mind that most furniture stores can give a better price than the one listed.

i went to a place and picked up a brown suede(ish) plush couch and loveseat combo for $700 and it's so damn comfy. dont' be afraid to hit up a large furniture store. they have some gems in there, you just have to look.

I found out Ikea's prices are twice as high in Canada than the US. Though overall, furniture costs a bundle anywhere over here. So in conclusion, in the US Ikea is very good value for your money.

Ikea is the H&M of furniture. Looks quite nice, not expensive, but crappy quality...
