sorry, nodded off there for a moment...
basically, realising where your battles are best fought does not equal lacking passion or concern towards quality, it's a matter of being a realist...
In general I work 10-14 hr days 6 days a week, I care deeply for what I do, but I'm also aware of what matters and widely it's not in a typeface, a pantone colour or whether someone has seen it before. It's not that those details aren't important, but they're not something the general purchasing public notices, it's the designer who can easily get lost in his or her own details and it usually ends up taking away from what the essence of the idea should be - the communication...
Auden once said –
“Some writers confuse authenticity, which they ought always to aim at, with originality, which they should never bother about.”I think the portfolio in question here is not original, but the work is his.. Let his potential clients or employer decide...

can see why you've gone to advertising

absolutely agree with snuggles there, couldn't have in a million years put it better.
I'm more concerned with the awful cod-military chat on this site than the blatant rip.
I wonder how many nights sleep Folkert will lose laughing at this thing?

well put snuggles.

RIP.

and the differences between authenticity and originality in design is..?
- kelpie0
well if your priority is originality you may well miss the point of communicating effectively with the people who will actually 'use' your design.
all those websites with annoying navigation where a simple tried and tested construct would work and all those designers raving about them cos they haven't seen it before. missing the point entirely.
obviously both would be nice, and in many areas essential, like branding for example, blah blah blah

i'm guessing it has to do with being true to your established intentions rather than believing you can come up with something never done before ..
i don't like to make assumptions
- neue75_bold0
as designers most of the time our profession is about assumption, most people don't do their research, they go with a gut feeling, instinct or rely on teachings that were 'proven' effective 20 years ago...
as an aside, coincidentally Folkert's presentation at Spark last year was all based on visual sampling... bitten on the ass?

thats the trouble with people not understanding that the design of an interface, or stealing it, is no different from stealing a style.
People don't spend a lot of time to just have it ripped off.
Don't think the rip on here is just a left and right hand frame thing... all he has done is rip every convention from it.

i don't like to make assumptions in these kinds of matters .. where there is a discrepancy in understanding what is ethical and what isn't

and the differences between authenticity and originality in design is..?

(Mar 28 07, 04:06)i hope there was no irony in that question.

you're in advertising?
- neue75_bold0
I don't get what you're saying or asking _salisae_? Are you asking what should be ethical or not to you personally?
No doubt this isn't 'ethical' but it's a small world and transparent people eventually get theirs without having a message board fixating on these issues...
This space is better used to discuss what Jaline did last weekend than Rip threads..

"Using Iconic "Stingray" and Retro L.A. Palm Tree symboloisism a forward moving financial gain."
hahahaha
- neue75_bold0
no, I'm still designing but doing more concepting, writing and guiding, the studio is focussed on campaign creation, so it's usually ID, packaging, web and advertising as standard components...
