At the last place I designed at all the other designers were women (4 of them, all cool). The AD and CD were both women and the Owner was a woman. And they were all bat shit crazy bitches.

two of the most respected (and talented) designers i've ever worked with are female. gender-bias just doesn't seem to factor into the professional design world as i've experienced it.
i do, however, plan on growing my own company to employ an army of designers and we WILL have glass ceilings and all female designers will be stationed on the second floor.

I believe one's wage depends on their professional, promotional and negotiation skills. If someone makes less than they think they should be, they need to work on those, as they're what you need to convince someone to pay you what you want.
Obviously, it's always easier to blame someone else.
