I make under 50k in St. Louis with 3+ yrs. experience.
My standard of living is probably similar to someone in NYC who pulls down at least 25k more, and that's accounting for over 10% of my salary being given to my church.
There aren't enough clients/good studios in NYC to make that seem palatable to me, as much as I love design.

130-150 is easy if you hustle and produce good work... i dont work in house so all my work is done from my own studio in my apt. work on a few projects at a time... all my work is art direction/design and alot of 3d and after effects which is a pretty good hourly rate... i also work alot... so if your good and have a few agencys you work with you can pull those numbers in...

yeah, sounds doable if you're doing motion work/aftereffects and 3d. but it all comes down to contacts I think (which it sounds like you have). people were making it sound like you could just plop down in NYC and start swimming in piles of easy freelance money.
who knows, maybe you can.

Have you seen fake-it-up's portfolio yet guys?
Wow.
Great work dude.
- fake_it_up0
yeah you need a good portfolio for starters... ive also worked in the NYC market for 4 years before going freelance so that helps a little but all comes down to how bad you want it and how much you wana work for it

I just got a raise yesterday too.
During the meeting the boss showed me a 1-14 salary chart that reminded me of an AIGA chart. It had the low, mid and high salary for each section 1-14.
I'm very happy with my salary now as I don't have my Masters and technically speaking I have little experience in the UI field (so HR says) but it was madness seeing real numbers within the company for where I stood and where I will be next year (with a year and a half company experience) and 3 years from now.
I fucking love this job.

(Mar 22 07, 06:25)i was ecaxtly there this year, i was at $45 for the last 6 years, i gave myself the raise that no else could give me.
you have to do it for yourself. if you work for yourself as freelance then who else is going to give you that raise?
i am also lots higher than senior level as well as i have been doing product development for the last 10 years. so i felt i earned my raise.

just wanted to thank you guys for the inspirational thread.
i just quoted a prospective client a rate that was $20/hr more that I normally change. best part was I felt like i had the expertise and experience to do so. I felt like I actually deserved it!
we'll see what they say, but if i had to guess right now it looks like the answer will be yes
*fingers crossed
- fake_it_up0
Nice dude... hope it works out for you....
