and according to the more recent story, it seems that global warming is going to solve the problem for us... no need to sign any stupid, useless, petition.
>> "Canadian officials said Tuesday they were uncertain if the controversial annual seal hunt can take place this year in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, citing higher-than-normal mortality rates of seal pups and poor ice conditions.
"It's unusual and it's giving us concern," Fisheries Department spokesman Phil Jenkins said.>>

sorry for intruding in a question i really don't know anything about this issue (i mean, what seal hunt represents for canadians, it's benefits or backdrops, etc), but there is a global interest for preserving wildlife - in which Canada is usually a leader most of the time btw.
this is not an attempt to soften your hearts, but the truth. Canada is the foremost country in the world in wildlife preservation (i'm not sure, since the US and Norway have the foremost natural park management, so they say). And that is why all this business seems strange and political to other people in the world, rather than deriving from common sense.
Of course economies have to grow and people need food (most people use this as a statement) but the good logic is: why do seals have to be beaten to death? if it's just a matter of balancing the species why just not shoot them fast?
the answer is easy. because people sell the fur too. is that right? is that wrong? i have my opinion but i'm not giving it since i think there are ways to kill an animal (even for the fur) with some efficacy. the bottom line is: nowadays you don't have to be a brute to make money.
i'm not playing the clever bastard here. In Portugal, we have people that stuck full-grown cows into spare-tyre vaults in lorries (i.e. trucks), and sell them over the border. It's a disgusting activity that ashames me. Not that it is played by my countrymen, but that it is played by people.
it is awful and revolting because it doesn't have to be so.
as you were. thank you for listening to me.

the fur trade is the only reason it continues. it's extremely profitable to sell the fur to big time fashion designers, probably mostley in europe too, and yes that's why they beat them to death on the head.

if it's just a matter of balancing the species why just not shoot them fast?
nope its just for fur
thats why people get so upset about it.
and rightfully so

and we're not much for perserving our natural resources.
fact is we live in a HUGE country with next to no people in it.
we tend to high light our "enviromental record" 'cause we hav'nt done as much damage to our forest as say the U.S.
but as our population increases and our oil becomes more and more coveted i think our enviromental record will start to become more and more tarnished

"Fishermen sell seal pelts, mostly for the fashion industry in Norway, Russia and China, as well as blubber for oil, earning about $60 per seal.
The Canadian government and isolated fishing communities insist they need the supplemental income from the hunt, since cod stocks have dwindled. The slaughter of some 320,000 seals in 2005 brought in $14.5 million in revenue."
I don't have a solid opinion about this because many people (like celebrities) protest against this without even researching most of the information about it.

I'm not sure what to think either. I do know that I hate it when people use lazy smear campaigns, and sign a petition or something, thinking that they've done something to make a difference. "oh I've signed my name in support of such and such. now my conscience is clear!" And when celebrities attach themselves to a cause just for a photo op - then go right back to their life of excess.
It seems there's the "commercial seal hunt" in the south (Newfoundland and St. Lawrence area), which I'm unsure about - and the issue of native hunting rights - which I think gets mixed up with everything and misunderstood.

and like I said earlier.. it seems that global warming is going to stop this from being an issue.
without ice in the St. Lawrence the seal pups can't survive - so there'll be none to club.
Sir Paul McCartney should be campaigning against that issue. It's so ridiculous that the seal hunt is even being talked about these days. there are other - more pressing issues to campaign against.
sorry if I'm being a bad buzz.
I think I'm done now.
