IN what sennse do they 'DJ' Do they write their own music or simply play someone elses? Do they make the music they play more than simply putting the needle on someone else record? If so, how much?

i suppose you could ask the same thing about graphic designers... yes?
- studderine0
The DJ's who merely play records. Mixing them. Not an artist. I do graphic design, but I am not an artist.

There is more artistic merit in design than playing someone elses record. No?

NO NO NO !!!
fading someone elses song/work into another person/bands song is not an art!
- Crouwel0
so artists, modern ones mostly, who sample other works or matter are not artists either?
what about reinterpretation, what about creating something new by means of collage? sound collage for this matter.
- Witt0
no.
why do people like to make everything easy? does it make them feel better?

define "artist"
define "dj"
- Crouwel0
deejaying does not have to be easy. there are a lot of deejays who do insane things with turntables and genuinely create something new by manipulating (selecting, pitching, scratching, fading etc.) existing compositions.
- Witt0
well the difficult part is to compose. what you're saying is just like using a ywft prefab vector.

They are artists in the same way a gardener is also a palm tree, or the same way I am Tom Jones because I sing Delilah in the shower.
- studderine0
true. but these ARE artists. i am talking about DJs at clubs that spin records/ fade them into one another. i remember talking to a dj at a club one time and he was talking to me about his "style". what a douche.

CrouwelYeah there are some... but MOST don't, clubs I've been to in the UK, they are just glorified jukeboxes
