I clipped this link from Design Observer.
Interesting article by Bruce Nussbaum

He makes a good point about an iterative/collaborative design approach.
I also liked what he said about language in calling the whole prociess 'design' as opposed to vision or innovation.
The point of this for me is the designers role is to provide claritty for these 'collaborative' endeavours rather than them descending into mis-directed hunts for a 'solution'

he's obviously speaking about some genuinely important issues, but what is he offering that hasn't already been said?
watered-down and self-congratulatory bollocks i say.

how stupid is this guy not to realize the obvious... there are real designers and there are fake designers, there are good designers and there are baaad designers....
Obviously this guy had nothing better to write about

"Challenge Your Assumptions. Think about the mink coat. It is beyond cool. It’s sustainable. You feed those little rat-y things with garbage that you throw out or food you grow, you create something that is comfortable, beautiful and gives you warmth for your entire life, you pass it along to another generation or recycle it or simply let it disintegrate. It’s organic, after all."
-am i missing something here or is this guy fucked?

The americans are yet to wake up, when they get a hold of this, it will crack 100...easily.

I am still mulling this over - but I might add that Nussbaum very often IS an advocate for design as a business principle.
However he is also pro doing free spec work and holding competitions, so he's losing points.

i was gonna post something like 'can i get the number for that Canadian chick?'

"We live a life in beta." Interesting. the article didn't seem to say much new, but I do think it helps keep us designers on our toes by keeping our clients in the loop. But as we all know, we can't let them in too much, as they tend to get in the way and muck up the whole process.
"I solve this problem by calling it all a banana." Call me 'Snortwhistle', that was kinda funny. Probably putting me outta the range of "that Canadian chick." C'est la vie, C'est la guerre.

I better not see that wanker on an empty street.
Stupid ol git.

OSFA and r_mutt: did you read his introduction to the article? It's a speech he gave to design management students at Parson's. Did you read the article at all?
I don't think he's fucked. And I guess you are missing something.
His ideas about sustainability and design (as it is on a larger scale, not just dudes making stuff with photoshop) are bang on.
Can't really give him much credit for originality. These ideas have been bouncing around for a long time - in many people's minds and written words. But I think it's cool that addressed this speech to design students. He purposes some really good questions and will hopefully inspire some great ideas.

what questions?
- akoni0
i think he has more beef with software companies that provide tools for designers, or make others think they are designers, then really having beef with designers
- OSFA0
No, I didn't read the whole article, if I wanna read about somebody bashing designers and styles, I'll check the PVN, it's a little more entertaining cuz it has pictures.
Specially the design cliches thread...
Everybody knows there is good design and bad design, but if this guy will release a statement saing 'Designers Suck' he better have a brilliant portfolio to back it up.
Hve u seen it?

Are designers really arrogant? Or are those new age apple fanatics with no experience arrogant? The ones who have already preordered the iphone and have to bug you about how they have the latest fastest and greatest macbook and iWeb and use Photoshop so now they are designers. I could design on an C64 if I had to. 64k baby!!!! I think it might go both ways. From my point of view, that's a royal pain to have to listen about how everyone is a designer now. I mean, google sketchup is out now so does that mean everyone is gonna be an architect and start trying to build houses? I hope so so the house will fall on their head and i dont have to listen about some arrogant designer BS ever again. Dude, smith corona released a word processor so i guess i'm like ernest hemigway now. what a load of crap. I drive a car so I guess bus drivers are arrogant. I have a toaster so Quiznos sucks now because I can toast my own subs. I got a sled from KMart so the US Olympic Bobsled team are no better than me. Arrogant pricks.
