Anyone here use a a monitor calibration tool like spyder or others? Is it worth getting? Does it make that much of a difference compared to just trying to calibrate manually?

I use ColorEyes display pro. I feel a little more confident about color with it, but who knows?

i saw spyder used once, totally impressive the changes it made and the accuracy of the print color, though not perfect.
i never bought it though

I've got a monacoOptix XR Pro at work. Great piece of kit, I'd request/buy another after working in a colour calibrated environment... and your screen looks GREAT after a tuneup with the calibrator.
it's nice to know that I'm smack-dab in the middle of the bellcurve when it comes to screen settings. therefore MOST people will see what I see, or close enough to it.

The short answer:
It's all bullshit when you're working on a sunny day or wearing a funky t-shirt.The long answer:
Eventhough it does make some sense to callibrate, i still find it's pretty useless when it comes to actually getting results. You still need to use a pantone book; and even then you never know what they'll do at the print shop while gang-printing your project. So, it's all very subjective.
I have a LaCie319 and it came with a calibrator... i spent $1,200 on the whole set up, but i feel now it's a waste. Really. Eventhough i can callibrate the shit out of the monitor, adjust it to different light temperatures, etc...
