Why not use Frames?

I notice while looking at several html sites. Often, the entire page refreshes instead of just having the image you're calling for change.
Is there a reason for this frame phobia? Why don't more people use frames?

They are dumb?

But why are they dumb I think is what he means. I use iframes on my FMT site and it works great.

I'm not afraid. As long as it's clean and the lines aren't too visible, frames are okay. Like this:

yes, iframes are great.

It used to be that google would not spider through framed site. Not sure there is still that issue.

iFrames are alright but where possible scrollable Divs are better.
Framesets however are bollocks - especially when they interfere with form and nav elements.

all frames; iframes or not, lack. it works in some cases, but as far as accessing data and linking they suck bawz

BAWZ I TELL YEE, BAWZ!!!!
AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY NEITHER!!!!

my fmt archive in the iframe is indexed by google no problems. scrollable div is a good solution to though. Just that iFrames are so easy.

using scrolling divs AND knowing how to target them from another div is a better way in my opinion - not that I exactly know how to do that, but with a little XHTML trickery I'm rather sure that it's possible.

So I have a frameset with about 80 links to my personal experiments on the left and these links load into the right hand frame.
I could write a cgi to fuzz it all into one page, but that would mean reloading the multipart link-list. I could snaffle the requested page and poke it into a div on the right but it would be hopelessly fucked without javascript turned on.
And either way Google spiders will still hit a wall at my index page.
I am doomed to a life of sin.

they don't work well, and they cause too many scroll bars
most people like to have only one scroll bar (NT has like 40)
that is why a lot of people are excited about "AJAX" because with javascript you can change the image only, instead of reloading the page
but yeah, frames are usually a bad idea
try using prototype or jquery to do some stuff, you will be surprised how easy it is

(Mar 13 07, 06:50)Der ... 4, haha. 4 scrollbars.
Which actually serve a purpose and are eloquently aligned too boot, haha.
If you respond, post, it changes, but seriously, how in the world are you supposed to combat that even with Ajax?

I use whatever works best for the application involved and the time allowed.
If it's HTML/CSS, fine, if it's Frames/CSS, cool, CSS only, no problem.
Version4 might hate me for this, but I've been dragging ass on my other portfolio which I had intended to do in CSS and AJAX only, now I just want to bang it out via HTML and Tables in one weekend to get it done with. Too much dicking around with cross platform multi-browser shit. I do that daily here and I'm so annoyed with it.
For my own work lately I've been tempted to do it as easy as possible just to get it done.
To each his own.
