looking at the canon EOS 20D. or the 400D. any thoughts?

the 30D looks good too. the 400D is 10mpx and the 30D is 8, and the 400D is cheaper?

Because the 20D and 30D are supposed to be more upper end cameras. better body and some better featutes.
Wait until the 40D comes out later this year, its going to be a good one.

megapixels are being pushed mostly for marketing reasons. sony 10mp ccd sensor used in nikon, pentax and sony dslr's is worse than their previous 6mp one, but there's nothing but megapixel race that speaks to the crowd

right. makes sense. at least with canon you're guaranteed good lens quality i guess.

I have a pentax and contemplate a move to canon for sensor quality and af purposes.

yeah the more pixels you cram into the same space, the worse the quality and high ISO noise is. I just bought a 30D and it poo's on the 400D.
Has a magnesium body, 5fps, better high ISO noise levels, bigger buffer, brighter bigger view finder, better ergonics, faster focus, twice the battery life and the list goes on...
I didnt wait for the 40D as a needed a second body now, I will trade up if the new model is worth the upgrade. (more fps or larger sensor size like a 1.3 crop)

slappy - the 30D is almost 3 times as expensive. out of my price range.

it's kinda like an ipod. i didn't own one forever! forever! always waited....sat there and waited...there is always something better to come out. more features, more capacity. but once i got it...fucking phenomenal! use it everyday and wonder why i waited so long to pick one up. both the ipod and the 20d.
and ps. the 30d still isn't worth the extra $ over the 20d. just get the 20d! and if you have any questions send me (or maybe even carty an email)

20D is good too if you can find one.
Its like 400 bucks difference between the 30D kit and the xti kit, you have to take a deep breath and remember you're worth it ;)

thought id let you know i bought the 400D - and its a great camera. really good quality images, especially when shot in RAW mode.
i'd definately reccommend for that price bracket. got a 50mm lens coming too, the standard lens is ok, not great.

400D is a good camera. The thrifty fifty is a good lens too, nice buy.
I bought a 30D the other day and I'm waiting for it to be delivered, waiting sux!

In the tech/electronics trade press there's serious talk of considerably cheaper digital SLR prices by years end - say dropping down into point and click range - due to vendor oversupply and manufacturing streamlining...I'm holding off until then..
