Ok, as we all know you don't get as much spyware or viruses on macs as you get on PC's. But, will you still get all that shit when XP is installed on a MAC? And also, does installing XP on a MAC improve XP or makes it worse?

yes cause most viruses are made for Windows environment and you are basically running a xp on a different type of computer.
but it would be isolated to that partition disk image
i have heard that xp wont improve, it will be as same as running xp anywhere.

From what I know from friends that have done this. It will partition your drive, so I think it could effect it the same way in which it would a PC machine. But those programs cannot effect your OSX partition. At least that's the way I understood it.
Hope that helps.

Hm, interesting... what if a virus formats the whole drive, will it kill a mac as well? There can be many partitions on one drive.
Also, i wonder why it doesn't improve XP since many claims about instability of XP are due to conflicting hardware.

unless you use parelle, you need to reboot to start on xp
so yes if you get a virus that kills your hd, it will kill everythign

really though, how many viruses actually format everything? know anyone thats had this happen to them? i don't...
that's not to say it won't happen but its unlikely. most of the common threats like spyware, adware etc will be confined to XP.

i had a quite a few of the HD damanging ones.
the nastiest ones are the ones that actually destroys hardware.

i find that most hazards can be avoided by simply not logging in as an admin unless you're actually doing admin stuff

Ok, get a virus scanner and all your worries are gone.

I'm not that worried about viruses that format hard drives... i mean, it's not why i started the thread. I'm just curious how all this works.

I'm on a MacBookPro at the moment running win XP in bootcamp. It works pretty much the same as running XP on any computer. I have anti-virus running. I have 50:50 win/mac on my hard drive. I've had small issues with odd things not working but I think they were down to drivers (digital camera). I had a major issue with a memory stick as well which screwed the installation - but again its now semi sorted ( I don't use the memory stick).
I have fastest MacBookPro with 3GB RAM - xp runs like lightening (PS/ILL/FLASH etc). Some issues with configuring dual monitors - but again google and persistance won through. Bootcamp is still beta but overall I'm 80% happy - I still feel the set up is non standard so I'm never sure if problems are my fault/win XP/or the MacBookPro so I guess it adds another level of complexity to maintaining ones system properly.
I also have parallels on the MAC OS - works well for testing.

trev you must have much spare time!

I've heard some crazy windows users have this thing called a "Virus checker" installed on their machines and they don't have any problems. It's madness I know.

XP running on a Mac is EXACTLY THE SAME as it running on a stand alone PC. You need to forget it's on a Mac and start worrying about potential virus threats, blue screens of death, unexpected crashing, restarting after doing just about anything, hardware incompatibility... the usual stuff.

if you get a virus that reformats your hard drive now a days your doing something seriously wrong.
don't be dumb, get anti virus and anti-spyware if you get windows.
