Anyone have a suggestion for a simple laptop bag? One that protects, looks messenger-esque and holds more than just a laptop like cords, etc.

make sure to get a sleeve to put the laptop in, that then goes in a bag.
i trust laptop bag padding about as much as i trust the news to be unbiased...

hmin-
in terms of protection i suggest you only purchase a bag from a manufacturer that specializes in laptop storage.
most messenger bags or backpacks today do have a slot for the laptop but its not specificly made for that usage.
also a lot of bag companies suffer the construction when the bag is made in the production a lot of the good padding or inner construction is taken out for cost reasons.
Tumi is a good example of this. on the outside their cases rule like no other, howwever on the inside the construction looks too similar of that which one would see for a back to school program.
remember you paid a lot for your laptop, so dont hold back in the case that holds it. not telling you purchase a mnster price bag but make sure you research the bag itself, read the user comments but dont live by their choices.
another manufacturer that also fails with the same as Tumi is BooqBags. the styling of their packs is very sleek and sporty but the inside suffers as no time was spent in their design like its not important as the outside which is what usually sells the case as most consumers dont pay much attention to this level of the detail that isnt there.
good luck.

tom bihn has sleeves that integrate with larger bags for extra protection but I have found that the protection they offer standard on their bags more than adequate. The bags, I have two, are well made and well designed. Thoughtful details. One more thing when three years after I bought one a strap grommet broke, they replaced it with a new strap happily and with speed and humor.
Worth every dollar.

what e-pill said, plus this sleeve rules the school. i have one and love it:
http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/retai…best padding i have seen in a sleeve ever.

when i mean by protection i mean you can drop the bag with the laptop in it.
tom bihn makes good quality products, but drop your bag with your laptop and kiss your laptop goodbye.

hasn't been my experience: and I've dropped it twice. I really thought I screwed the pooch but nothing happened. Depends on the angle I guess and some luck plus a good bag.

xenicon-
you are also right, i mean in my end of the business when we test the product we really put the product thru tests any normal person wouldnt be putting their cases in that kind of damaging environment.

gotta know the limits too because they are all going to fail in some way but much worse than others and sooner. Do you have a favorite all things considered?

yeah e-pill - gotta favourite?

i personally do not carry a bag...if it doesnt fit in my pockets its not comming with me.
its also very hard for me to purchase any bag as i spend too much time searching the construction for mistakes or imperfections or just knowing the cost behind that scary high end market value price.
i see bags daily, am surrounded by backpacks and messengers and handbags so much that really i dont want anything like that near me.
in terms of favourites i like details in different companies but i havent seen really one that shakes me to the core.
i would love to be financially backed to frankenstein my own backpack monster, but it seems i have to suffer in my designs when costing in production comes to me aand explains i am craazy to try to make a bag that costs more than the retail would.
i hope that makes sense.

wierd site, great bags.
Check out amazon shops for second hand ones though as I thought they were a bit pricey.
