so i was kinda wondering..as a designer...how many of you make all the elements of your designs? as in...do you all have your hands in some illustration and other endeavors that enhance your designs? i cant draw.

yes. doodle, draw, sketch, arrange, map, collage, etc. do it w/o care and all the time, it is a good way of looking at the world and the things we place in it, IMO.

studderine-
thru constant practice, style and interputation is formed. just keep doodling from life...you as an artist is only as good as your reference.
always look from life to help strengthen your art.
use light and tone to help also guide you thru this.
you can draw...you just havent started to draw yet...
life needs little pushes here and there..
good luck.
:)

ya know..when i was in college studying this stuff, there were only a handful of us that were actually competent artists..in the sense of being able to draw fairly well...the rest of my class could barely get it together to do a stick figure..
but by the end of third year, most of them had improved dramatically....
and more important than that, its no that often that i'm required to draw something freehand in this line of work...
the good thing is that when i do have to, i'm able to...but as the old man once said...you don't have to know everything...you just have to be able to hire those that do...
in other words, if a kick ass illustration is required in a job, you hire a kickass illustrator..or you go to a stock site like istsock.com and purchase it...helps if you can do your own..but it aint neccesary ...
also, some of the cats in my school that sucked the worst at drawing also happened to be some of the best when it came to design in general (good use of type, layouts etc)
hope that helps..
and yeah...if you want to get better at it...draw draw draw alllll the time...doodle..whatever..
practice makes perfect..ex

(Feb 22 07, 06:27)here, in every sense of the phrase it's a team effort. nothing anyone 'designs' here is 100% their own. We'll have meetings discussing how to make each and every design better. The initial concept can be yours but the finished product is usually a team effort.
I'm not very good with advanced CSS and AJAX, so when building prototype apps I call on the support from the guy here who is really good at it.
You definitely don't have to do every aspect of design well to be a good designer. SOmetimes it's all about using the resources you have, and calling in others to help get the job done.

I'm a web designer, but for graphic design I use my hands, primarily. Then Adobe programs.

I have sharpies everywhere and I write and doodle things down on post-itâ„¢ notes, I fold them up and put them in my pocket and I carry them around with me like a talisman. I meditate on it, all the while avoiding the computer and thinking everything through in my head. I usually wake up in the morning, a day or so later with the idea fully formed in my head. It sounds really strange describing my workflow, but that's usually how it happens.

i'm a web designer, everythig i do is my own...
...I was wondering with you graphic designers: what do you do with your portfolio's... i mean if you didn't do all of a project, can you put these projects in your portfolio's without breaking some copyright or stepping on someone's toes :/
- Mimio0
Really, you do your own photography, retouching, copywriting, and illustration?
- saint_x0
you design and code your own fonts too, roomfive? that's rad!

(Feb 22 07, 08:19)"great point. this industry is based around honesty, integrity, and to a certain degree, exclusivity.
there are lot's of charlatans out there claiming credit for someone else's work. but for the most part, try and be as far and clear as you can about your role in a project. one can only hope others do the same.

I write pictures

I've learned the hard way that a desire for exclusive authorship doesn't get one very far in the design world.
I do think, however, that it's impossible to be a creative person and not take a vested personal interest in your work, to crave some ownership...but at the end of the day you must rely on the opinions and expertise of others. I'm a typographer and a decent illustrator, but if I need something complex or totally different from how I usually work, I'll contract out for that part of the project. Humility goes a really long way. Also, giving credit where it's due in one's portfolio dramatically increases prospective employers' trust in you as an ethical individual.

I buy rands written pictures.

I phone it all in from a beach in the Cayman Islands.

I bought a baroque-style picture of the Qoob sitting on the john for 100 South African rand.

I try and do as much as possible. Photoshop, illustrator etc. But I tend to use a lot of royalty free imagery that I bastardise as well. More often it's down to budget than anything else.
I can draw though http://www.philipregan.com/sketc…
Pick up a pencil and a moleskin and just doodle. Things don't have to look real to be great.
