I've learned the hard way that a desire for exclusive authorship doesn't get one very far in the design world.
I do think, however, that it's impossible to be a creative person and not take a vested personal interest in your work, to crave some ownership...but at the end of the day you must rely on the opinions and expertise of others. I'm a typographer and a decent illustrator, but if I need something complex or totally different from how I usually work, I'll contract out for that part of the project. Humility goes a really long way. Also, giving credit where it's due in one's portfolio dramatically increases prospective employers' trust in you as an ethical individual.
