I think if you want a weapon to defend yourself, you should at least learn how to defend yourself w/o one. A lot of self defense is not succumbing to fear when a crisis arises. In the forum someone said this :
"Not martial arts, but the type of class the teaches you how to use your keys as a weapon and how to break free of a choke hold."
If you learn something in a self defense seminar, odds are you won't remember it in a panic.
I study jujitsu and judo. It has definitely sharpened my senses, in regards to all types of conflicts.
Edd-e is also a ninja.

i do own a gun (not a handgun, but a rifle) and it is not at my place. my dad bought it for me years ago for my birthday (21st). i told him he can keep it at his place. i'm not a fan of guns, and find that most people that actually take it a step farther and carry one(only a couple people i even associate with) are paranoid schizos.
that last part was a lie. i don't hang out with anyone that carries a gun...at least i don't think so.
i kind of associate people that carry guns with people that drive hummers...scared and tiny....usually.

as far as guns go, i guess it must depend upon where you live. around here, EVERYONE has guns.

Yeah, but the question becomes: is it better for everyone to have guns? or for no one to have them?

(Feb 17 07, 08:05)i havent looked at any recent studies, but some indicate conceal and carry laws are much to do about nothing.
even in texas, few take advantange of them...
and they don't seem to have a postive or negative effect on crime...
if i was in a high risk situation, say i ratted out some of my russian mafia contacts...
then, yea i'd carry a gun.
but fuck living daily life with that kinda of irrational fear of the outside world.

in nyc, if you carry an unregistered gun, you can get arrested and get 3yrs sentence. also, it's extremely hard to get a permit here. so i assume most people who has guns here probably owns unregistered.

gun crime is growing in London so I guess it won't be long when we're all living like Baz Luhrmann's romeo and juliet. http://www.romeoandjuliet.com/se…
Ammo is so expensive these days, whatever happened to mano-a-mano fistfights?

Ponyboy?

also, ask v4. I think he owns some guns.

I think blaw has a point. If everyone in an area has a gun, I can see how one may want to keep one just in case.
That being said, I'm not into possessing guns. Maybe it's because I live in Ottawa, Canada (the crime rates here are pretty low), but I feel really safe here, even walking around, alone (at night too).

i have a BB gun, but I don't go on the streets with it;

With government like ours, can you really blame anyone for owning a gun?

one local community made a bit of a stir last year when they wanted to mandate that every resident possess at least one firearm.
hell, i have a fund raiser ticket hanging on my fridge right now that gives away a handgun, shotgun, or rifle everyday for three months. (haven't won anything, yet).
handle them safely, teach your kids and, oh yeah... don't break into my house. :)
