i feel that ideal is limited and close minded. all artists design and all design is artistic.
dont place these tiny minded titles on such things.

I find artists are given the ability to be more eccentric in their work, when compared to designers.

a designer solves problems, an artist smears shit on a cnavas and calls it the virgin mary.

a designer has to smell clien's ass, while the fine-artist smells its own shit on canvas. both are artists if transforming their personal experience into a public experience.
btw.. there is no second shit drafts or smelly proposals for the fine artist. he makes his own shit and carries on with the cash, even fooling the wisest rich client, while the designer has to please hime and do whatever he has in mind aesthetically or not... .
...and the market is completely different for both...

Interesting thread.
But if you had the choice, to be a designer OR an artist (Work primarily on the computer, or work primarily with the fine arts) what would you choose?
Not many people know the name of the world's most famous designer.

Artists are slaves of their own mind, designers are slaves of their clients.

Of course there are exceptions to this statement.

Funny that there are folks here who haven't seen this:

It's on QBN cinema and it raises the point of how art influences design.

Designers satisfy clients.
Artists satisfy themselves.

(Feb 11 07, 10:31)Tell that to an artist who has to churn out 50 copies of the same old shit to please a patron.

(Feb 11 07, 11:08)We'll that would mean that the artist isn't being true to themselves. The artist has the power to say no to the patron.

this is just my line of shit...
... but if you're a designer and you lack in talent 'artistic talent'... then chances are you're shitty designer...
... or a mediocre tech-based decorator at best.
again... that's just my two cents...
then you have your 'craftsmen' who paint beautiful pictures and are very skilled w/their brushes and understanding of 'rendering'... but perhaps lack where it monetarily counts:
-> concept / ability to carry out a concept in manner that effectively communicates (or... 'was designed')...

I know a bunch of people who trained as fine artists and their work was shaped not simply by their ideas but the limits the world placed upon them.
Try as I might to be true to myself, I can't defy the laws of physics, and I can't defy my bank manager.
It's seeing artists and designers being given these limits and how they deal with them that defines good work.
On the matter of self satisfaction, look up Marina Abramovic. Her work was pretty much all about not being satisfied.

OMFG this is why I hate art! I went to a school that did not respect "designers". In fact we had a whole lecture dedicated to "design" vs. "art".
Allowing students to "design" would have hurt the reputation of the school, so we were taught and expected to produce only "high art". It was a disgusting load of bull shit that ran so deep I almost drowned in it several times. Such a bunch of elitist bastards.
Fuck "art". Make whatever the hell you want. If you or someone else is stoked on it that's awesome.

that belief video is trash

Can't believe I let myself be drawn into a "what is art" discussion. I should be above this sort of thing. I'm off for a spliff.
Laters.

"Designers satisfy clients.
Artists satisfy themselves."SO in that case a musician is more of a designer than an artist???
Things that make you go hmmm.
