I do...for most of my conversations with people, to be honest. It gets you places. But I can't help it when my eyes glaze over or they just suddenly roll in the background.
Basically, I have a good sense of humour but I don't generally laugh out loud (b/c many people aren't as funny as they believe themselves to be), I don't like it when people send me pictures of their animals because I could care less.
Anyone who does the same thing as me or feels the same way as I do will be my new friend. I do have best friends I talk to about things, but it's a whole different level of connection when they have the same sense of humour as you do.

Also, I think most people do it at work just to seem like less of a freak or antisocial. To seem personable and to keep the job.

(Feb 2 07, 08:34)did you not just describe "socialising" rather than "scmoozing" though, jaline?

can we get back to dirty sanchez?
- Jaline0
could be, kelpie, haha. I guess that's why I could relate with Dexter from "Dexter", except for the serial killer part.
But the definition of both is quite similar:

no. i'm polite and professional and respond genuinely to people, but won't schmooze for the sake of it.
it's invariably transparent - schmoozers are chumps.
- Jaline0
I thought that too, but sometimes I have to laugh at people's jokes.
Basically, I can also tell if someone knows I'm faking it and then I stop, otherwise it depends on where I am. If I'm at work then I'll laugh because my boss starts laughing and actually goes on for a few seconds, clearly expecting me to laugh or attempting to get me to laugh.

I am honest though. If someone asks me something I will tell them my honest opinion. People appreciate it, for the most part.

I don't do it, but the real estate broker I'm dealing with is a true master. It also doesn't hurt that she's super hot.
Some are better than others. If you're just putting out a nice vibe, then I'm ok with it, but if you're just trying to get over on someone, it's just the dark side of the force.

I just like getting along with people, basically. But obviously I won't go to extremes or become completely fake or someone other than who I am. I feel that sometimes it's a necessity.

i crave it

the other day i was working late and i heard a group of people having schmooze drinks round the corner doing that loud fake HYUCK-HYUCK-HYUCK!! that is laughed when someone important makes a joke and i hated them.
that said, i'm usually the first there for free drinks. is that schmoozing or is that just being a free party vulture? i don't laugh unless someone is funny at least. i've got standards. sort of.
- Sven_sk0
no. but i'll dirty sanchez.
ps. define schmoozing. like brown nosing or networking or what?
- mexicandave0
Yep sure do. Pay lip service, laugh at their crap jokes, show interest in their vacation pics, cause apathy never paid the mortgage
- _salisae_0
no, but i love the play like quality of someone trying to schmooz me or someone i'm around.
go on .. SELL. give it your ALL.

point5 you seem like a nice guy, handsome too if you don't mind me saying so, in a completely hetero way of course. I would really like to know what you think about schmoozing. I bet you insights are quite facinating.
like that?
- Point50
thanks Sven_sk... I almost had a coffee drenched keyboard!
I commonly view schmoozing as being overly nice to clients and kissing their asses to get in good with them. It drives me up the wall and I hate when I get caught up in the whole act with my bosses there and I find myself guffawing at the bad jokes and complimenting them on their sales and such. I hate it. And part of me thinks that may be why I won't ever own my own studio because I can't stand that whole side of business... the pseudo-socialize with the client side.

schmoozing = being phony.
more respect for people that don't.
people that do schmooze always want something from you and its always transparent. only question is: what do they want?
- version30
forget business
be their friend
be honest
do what they do. ie; drink, hit the bar, hit the club, strip club, go go carting feel them out do something not about work. unless they want you to feel out their place of business. tricks don't work, at least not for me anyway
