sorry for the metaphors. i meant that your work doesn't have to be about you. just do it and let it grow for itself. kinda like a beard ;)

Witt,
There is a lot of wisdom (and facial hair references) in you words.Thanks.

No, but it's consistently unreliable.

Not at all. Don't fall for the crazy = genius bullshit.

Not at all. Don't fall for the crazy ≠ genius bullshit.

well, I'm not sure about how much graphic design applies. But I know through times of strife, I can create some fucked up, honest art.
just me though.

Me too. Inner struggle definitely encourages me to sensor less, which is kind of refreshing sometimes. Sometimes it just produces sappy sentimental garbage, but some of my favorite pieces come from these times of introspection as well.

thanks crouwel :)
people who refer to themselves as 'crazy' or 'whacky' probably belong on The Office.
Or atop a blazing inferno.

one can be balanced and introspective and still deliver the goods. there may be some positive correlation betwixt "genius" and insanity, but i wouldn't hold my breath.
correlation does not equal causation.
- Rand0
graphic design probably isn't the most fertile field for finding geniuses

On the other hand it is the perfect field for becoming demoralised and depressed, which is a great help when pretending to be deep and meaningful as you waste your life away.

If there was a bright side to depression, Dr. Schildkraut saw it. “Depression in the artist,” he noted, “may be of adaptive value to society at large” — meaning it could inspire great paintings, symphonies and novels. That’s a controversial idea, insofar as it raises a moral dilemma: does treatment, while benefiting the patient, come at a cost to culture?

getting your head straight leads to better ideas/execution.
diorama view: "i hate me" this and that feels much more dramatic to oneself than to others. that's why poetry is one of the lowest commercially successful forms of literature.
relying upon "mental instability" is bullshit and insulting.
