I heard a rumor that these are just the beta icons, and the ones with the real release will be different. don't know if this is true though.

(Dec 29 06, 09:55)yeah that's what i was thinking.. specially since the final CS3 version of Acrobat uses the original logo, would be odd if the rest were just monograms.

nocomply i dont believe that to be true
several head adobe officials have already said these are it. also some people in the know have confirmed that these are the icons in use, and said they would look better with the packaging they have planned.but these are not beta icons as pointed out by the blog link posted in the response above.

Thanks to John Nack I had the opportunity of asking a few questions about the new direction to Ryan Hicks, Sr. Experience Designer at Adobe:

"You might wonder why Acrobat Reader hasn't "Ar" as icon or "Pd" or something, just to take the same line with the rest of the products. The curvy triangle is so well known that it's obvious they kept using it for the icon. I think if the other applications had a similar icon over the years, they would have done the same. Since there are none they decided to use a two-letter mnemonic 'nickname' system as their primary identifier."
Jackasses could of brought back Illustrator's "Venus" And Photoshop's Camera as for Bridge and InDesign... Well then design an icon that becomes a recognized symbol for users. they forced the butterfly, flower and feather down our collective throats now we are getting a periodic table over a color wheel...

note at bottom of veerle entry:
"I just learned that my thinking was right, the design was done by the design team of the former Macromedia. I knew it :p"
all makes sense now. never did like the macromedia branding.
