i am sprucing up my portfolio to try and get some new employment this upcoming year. has anyone ever done just like fake ads (ads that you would do if you had that job) in their portfolio? any examples?

I have to admit I faked some extra stuff in a folio (like you made the biz cards and fake some fitting letterheads)
but faking clients is absolutely out of range. don't even try.

yeah i am not talking about faking clients. i mean like saying 'oh this is what i would have done with this campaign' or just coming up with different ads for existing companies, and saying up front 'this is NOT a client'. no no no not faking clients, thats sketchy.

I think it's totally cool to make new campaigns/ads and put them in your portfolio. Just make sure you tell your possible employer that this is "your take" on a campaign. Don't pretend Apple hired you to do something new.
When I started out I looked through magazines and cut out ads I thought were crappy. Then I did them much better and presented both. Potential employers loved it.
Just make sure your ads are better than the originals otherwise you'll look like a tool.

Not a prob, Bob. Post some of your stuff once you've done some. I'm sure everyone here would want to rip you a new one.
Kidding (not really)...just make sure it looks good, pay attention to detail, make it look as real as possible.

Go ahead mate. What you're talking about is not faking. That is just showing how you think and how you solve a problem. Do it on some the clients you would end up working for if you got the job. They would be flattered if you took the time to do that...

And if you're real ballsy and good, redo something that one of your possible employers did.
It's taking a risk, but if you do better than they actually did, you're a shoe-in for the job.

there's no need to do fake work. just put it in a 'misc' or 'experimental' section in your portfolio and it won't be fake anymore.

redoing ads is like monday morning quarterbacking.. no challenge in it

just be original honestly...If you see that somebody else did a great project, like Stardust's Hugo Boss project, be careful not to do a faux Hugo Boss motion piece in the same style. I would pick a client that is in desperate need of some better advertising (i wont name names) and apply your skills to boost their image. in regards to one of the other posts about picking the same work that your company did, you may step on toes. Suppose they wanted something better but the client refused, and you come across as some hot shot kid thinking he/she can do better...? I would rather explain your approach on your "fake" project, and your reasoning for decisions, and explain how that fits into the position that they are looking to fill. Hope that helps,
AndrewPS - I want to do some fake ads too :)

If you want to create some fake ads, why don't you just create "clients" with fictional branding?
Eliminates any risk.
