OSAKA, Japan (AP) -- In a bid to escape the blistering criticisms of a recent racist tirade in a Los Angeles comedy club that inflamed the African American community in the United States, actor/comedian Michael Richards embarked on a goodwill tour of Asia. However two days into the trip, the unfortunate performer again let loose a racist rebuke to hecklers in the audience.
Richards, shell shocked and currently sequestered in his Osaka hotel room issued an apology through his management. The issued statement said his remarks were due to a "lack of knowledge of the local culture" and that Mr. Richards was tired and possibly ill and suffered exhaustion from jetlag.
During the evening's performance at Slim Jimmy's Comedy & Karaoke Club in Osaka, a number of men in black suits in the audience talked loudly during Mr. Richards performance. According to eyewitnesses, Mr. Richards turned to them after a few minutes and said, "Shut up! What are you? Ninjas?! A hundred years ago we'd have you upside down with fucking chopsticks up your ass."
The normally sedate Japanese crowd sat shocked as Mr. Richards continued, "Ninja, ninja, ninja, ninja!! You're nothing but a bunch of ninjas!!"
In response, the black clad men, reputedly members of a local Yakuza family, stood up, bowed and stated "You were not very funny even on Seinfeld, Kramer-san." and exited the club quietly, as the American comedian continues to berate them, "Oooohh..I said it..scary word isn't it..ninja! Ninja! Ninja!"
The local Osaka media responded the following day with editorials skewering the comedian with the racist tag and berating his performance. Their are calls to block Mr. Richards from ever performing in the nation again and their are rumors of this intensifying tensions between the US and Japan. Two rival Yakuza families have agreed to combine their organizations for the first time in over two hundred years to combat the performer and the racist stereotypes from the stage.
"We Yakuza are not ninja, and ninja, like our Yakuza families, are a proud and famed part of Japanese heritege. We will not allow our honor to be tarnished by a foreign devil comedian with jokes."
American Reverend and activist Al Sharpton was reportedly on his way to Japan to help smooth tensions. Sharpton was reported to say on boarding his plane, "Being a ninja is really a state of mind, a way of life. We must stand up for our ninja brethren wherever they may be." Rev. Sharpton will be arriving in Japan on Tuesday morning.
