I'd recommedn this book to anybody working with brands...

Explains the process easily. Specifically the destinction of what a brand is. IE, Brand themes and values drive the core collateral of a brand. Not the other way around.
Basically the big idea that everything else follows.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about but they use snappy copy, gorgeous photography and simple graphic devices to visualise strategic messages. Too american? Too corporate? Too Print? (usually when people talk about all those huge ident agencies they seem to be televisual rather than internal-corporate)
