Hi all,
debating whether to get a Apple MacBook with a 13.3" screen and a Apple Cinema Display (20") or whether to just get a 17" mac book pro.
I know the laptop has a smaller hard drive (60 gb), but I've got a 250GB exernal hard drive.
I will use it for general graphic design really, no video editing, just photoshop, dreamweaver and indesign really. I do a few presentation here and there, hence the need for a laptop, plus I work and sit in the garden when the summer comes around :)

MacBook Pro 15" with a 20" or 23"
The 17" MB is too big imo.Never get a MacBook, they are not meant for Adobe software at all!!!

didn't you just get a 20" imac?
and _jens_, what are you on about?

second the mbp, but like they said, get the 15" and save some scratch with a 20" or 24" dell monitor.

get a 15'4 laptop - great for presentations and usable for work (13'3 is too small)
add a cheaper dell 20" display, it's technically the same.

Cheers, thats what I'm gonna do, problem is, where I got it from; John Lewis, they only seem to stock the older version of the laptop, i.e. not the intel core duo 2.

So is there a major differenc between the two?

if i had the resources i'd save some money over the 17" mbp and go with the 15" glossy version and max the ram.
then save some more cash and opt for the 20" widescreen monitor from dell.
this is actually the system i run at work. it's amazing and can't see myself working any other way. the dvi input to the dell is of amazing quality on the monitor and the colors are top notch.
at home i have the same monitor and i just take the mbp home and use it there too as my own.
love it.

I'd swap my glossy mb display for matte anytime, if only they were produced..
can't stand the glare, especially compared to the 20" LCD

it's really that bad rafalski?
played with a mb at the apple store and fry's electronics these past few weeks and thought they were wonderful. didn't notice much glare at all, but i suppose if you're next to a window or out in the sun it might be a problem.
it's really that bad? i was going to get it as an option on my next purchase.

unless you have a glossy extra screen, go with matte
working with both glassy and matte side by side is annoying as hell
- k0na_an0k0
dang. now i'm completely turned off to the glossy.
in the store i thought it was pretty nice and made the colors pretty rich, but i can see where the two different screens side-by-side could be annoying.
glad i clicked on this thread. probably saved me some trouble.

But then, kona, I don't like glossy screens at all (they're meant to pretend they're glass tubes imo), while many people prefer them to mattes. It is personal. Laptop screens aren't best at color reproduction and amplifying brightness with glossy overlay is not going to make them display proper tones.. Also, laptops are known for improper brightness, ie. pictures edited on them can appear darker on standalone screens - I don't know if the gloss makes it better or worse.
As for annoying reflectiveness, I had to sail for shadow when outside last summer, felt like windsurfing ;)

you will be much happier with matte k0na, glossy is nice too, but once you only have a few light sources they will be in yr screen, ann0yin U like heLL!
the store have lots of good light so you don't see it much there

wow. learn something new everyday.
thanks guys! appreciate the insight.
i was very close to buying a glossy for home use. glad i didn't.

i've got a glossy and i use it directly beneath (inches away infact) of a incandescent desk lamp all the time and have never had a glare issue, unless it is powered off. the brightness of the lcd has been enough to overpower any glare i would experience.
