The Linotype version isn't nearly as prolific. You're thinking of FF DIN.

Microsoft seems to have redone it for zune. From what I've seen so far, '7' has lost its distinctive serif, but other than that it seems ok

it's not everywhere since 2000. that's when people started ripping each other off till death. also, that's when the design boOM! started (yeah! most of it is fake).
anyway, you can get a free version if you search for Din Mittelschrift in the proper channels. I can't say anything else.
