Someone just help the man!
First off - I'm probably not the best person to listen to.
That said, last time I had to effect gold leaf, i used a colour in the range of c33, m43, y89, k18, with a slight tonal gradient, then a white-alpha gradient sheen over the top to mimic shinyness.

erm..
I do recall having to use this quite dark colour as the subject had reflective quality and was reflecting something dark - obviously it'd've been the opposite way around had the picture been reflecting lightly.
If that makes any sense?

choose and pms gold and then convert to cmyk?
- Rand0
that is to say "a" pms gold

0/16/100/0, eh?
Yeah, that is totally different to my thinking - that's actually 'gold' gold colour, isn't it? Not a bodge of a real-world perception from a photograph.
Love that shade of orange. Love it.

if i recall correctly (never used it myself) you cannot compose gold truthfully. the trick is to simulate it by creating a triangle of colours or something that the eye interprets as one colour but is in fact 3. i've read this somewhere.

:)
thank you all!

open up your swatches panel in illustrator, choose pantone metallics. Find a gold colour you like –> convert to cmyk. But you'll never get a decent gold colour in cmyk because it won't be metallic.

umm...probably not much help but a quick reference guide for you if you haven't seen it:

----------------------------i can't remember where it was, sorry. maybe in some oil paint book. the idea was that as you cannot replicate "purpurinas" (i have no english for this) you have to simulate the solid color of the pigment + the refraction itself, light intensity, etc.
