comp usa is blowing em out if you are in the market

yeah, those are core duo, not core2 duo. that's why.
i'd buy if they were core2 duo.
- formcounterform0
there isnt that big of a dfiference between to the 2 models. the only real advantage the core 2 duo models have is that they can hold 3 gigs of ram instead of 2. but the difference between the chips isnt a big deal AT ALL.
- tkmeister0
i read somewhere that core2 duo has a better heat efficiency. also, apple did make some minor internal architecture change. i think the difference overall is a lot. but when you just look at the chip, it may not be that apparent.
- formcounterform0
performance wise it really isnt a huge upgrade, not realy worth the price. most people arent opening up their laptops so the interior architecture isnt a big deal. as far as heat apple released firmware to for the core duo heat plus there are apps that let u control the fan speed. i work for apple so i know what they changed, and it isnt worth the price of the upgrade. if i was in the market for a laptop the core duo is better for your dollar considering the price is reduced, the real upgrades to the macbook pros will come with the release of the santa rosa chipset. the core 2 duo is a "hold over" release, similar to that of the so called "new ipods", which was basically only a hard drive size bump and some new firmware.

since you work for apple, i am going to ask this question.
are core duos they are selling on refurb section now brand new?
- Balance0
Apple reps at the stores claim that the core 2 duo are 40% faster. That's not true?
- rafalski0
Does the 15.4" macbook rumour have any base?..
- formcounterform0
oh yeah and firewire800 was added back. i know in some retail stores new macbook core duos are being sold as refurbs, and some are being sent back to apple.com i suspect to be sold via the net, so there is a very good chance u could get a new computer even if you buy thru the refurb section.
the 40% faster is a lab benchmark and i doubt real world users will see a 40% increasse in peformance. especially considering the largest drive is 5400 rpms...that will bottleneck speed..there are just too many factors to take the 40% increase as a real world standard.
as far as a bigger macbook i dont know anything about that. i havent even heard that as a rumor..*shrugs*is this an upgrade yes? is it worth it? not hardly. like i said earlier i would rather save more money and get a core duo, and wait for the newer laptops with the santa rosa chipset which hopefully will be here around the release of leopard.

my mad 4200 rpm is the speed of the larger drive
- tkmeister0
formcounterform,
i guess you are right. i probably won't notice that much difference between core duo and core2 duo. i am running 867mh PB now, so MBP itself will be a significant upgrade.i saw 2.16 core duo for 1599 in apple refurb store. i think that's a killer deal. maybe i should buy one.

so, do you have an idea when leopard will be released?
thanks! 'cause my old 'puter is
on its last legs :(

Rand is my macdaddy.

Rand I currently have a Mac Pro, and its a beast. Supposedly octocores will be out sooon, 4 processors with 2 cores. That is alot of power, personally I think the current Mac Pro is more than enough machine being that most programs can only thread commands to a certain amount of processors anyways, and most machines cant optimize 8 cores. Unless the new OS allows for core assignment, i think 8 cores is a waste on a personal machine..unless u are doing shit loads of final cut and after effects and maya.
