What would you say are the primary functions of a design department within a corporate environment?
In other words, what would you expect your design department to provide?

Designs...

world domination, or even something beyond that.

and secondly (this is the uninteresting part), maybe take care of all internal and outgoing communication of that company, integrating traditional methods with innovative approaches to the HR and its market, blah blah blah.

I would think in a best case scenario, an in-house dept. would function just like an outside agency. Only difference being shorter timelines and less pay.

you'll be a marketing department's bitch. unless you have a very strategic smart creative director.
in the worst case senario, you'll do some crap for all other internal department's design needs and provide whatever they ask for.
what area of corporate environment?

you'll think you're a designer
they'll think you're a production artist, available to cater to their every whim

I work at IBM, doesn't get more corporate than that, but I work in software development. We're expected to work with human factors to develop and design user interfaces, illustrations and graphics for documentation, design icons, follow guidelines, create guidelines, create project level marketing pieces, design a quarterly newsletter, make animations and demos, and look good doing it.

Yeah, that sounds about right to me. I used to work at AOL -- the only huge thing that you did not mention is Advertising. working with ad sales teams to create presentations, demos, ad product prototypes, and actual banner ads, "takeovers" etc....

wow everything you have states is what I do , argh i hate corporate crap

it really depends on the company. As ninja said, at IBM, design functions fall under IT (the same was true for many software, web shops early on) At most traditional corp. environs, it falls under Marketing. And yes, for the most part you act as an in-house agency. Under no circumstance should you be viewed as their "bitch" but many times individuals in marketeting may get that misconception. Dispell that immediately. You are team mates, working for the same goal. Keeping the damn company afloat!
Duties include:
Print (ads, biz-to biz, collateral, etc..)
Photo Shoots (staff , products, etc..)
Web, Demos, Motion graphics
Co-brands and brand extensions, brand cop,
Sales presentations...in no particular order...all depending on how well staffed the in house dept. is to handle those jobs. If they don't have the budget to hire, say, a motion graphics pro, then it gets farmed out.
Sorry to ramble but I served many years as a AD for an in-house dept. I just got sick of having to explaing just this to Marketing every three months..

Luckily for the most part here we are regarded as one of the software engineers. The code we own is the graphics. We don't touch advertising though. I believe we farm that out to Ogilvy & Mather among others. Thats a whole other part of the company that works with that. But I think the distinction as a software engineer makes all the difference since we are part of the development process and not just a job shop. Also means we are on the same pay scale which is nice.
