it really depends on the company. As ninja said, at IBM, design functions fall under IT (the same was true for many software, web shops early on) At most traditional corp. environs, it falls under Marketing. And yes, for the most part you act as an in-house agency. Under no circumstance should you be viewed as their "bitch" but many times individuals in marketeting may get that misconception. Dispell that immediately. You are team mates, working for the same goal. Keeping the damn company afloat!
Duties include:
Print (ads, biz-to biz, collateral, etc..)
Photo Shoots (staff , products, etc..)
Web, Demos, Motion graphics
Co-brands and brand extensions, brand cop,
Sales presentations...in no particular order...all depending on how well staffed the in house dept. is to handle those jobs. If they don't have the budget to hire, say, a motion graphics pro, then it gets farmed out.
Sorry to ramble but I served many years as a AD for an in-house dept. I just got sick of having to explaing just this to Marketing every three months..
