I don't have a degree.
I used to convince myself that I was anti-establishment and that I didn't need a bit of paper to say 'I have talent.'I did a course when I was 17 to learn the software basics. Everything else I know is self taught.
I now worry that, despite the 3yrs industry experience I have and a decent portfolio, graduates know/have something I don't.
I would be interested to speak to someone from a respected agency, for example, about the real advantages of having a degree.
Is there elitism in our industry?

I have a BFA and Masters in design. Both were good experiences. Of course, this depends on school, faculty there, time in your life, etc...
As for it being useful in the industry, it all depends on what you want to do. It certainly wont help in any instance – but if you want to teach or deal with some of the bigger fish agencies, they are normally looking for a degree of some sort.

I have a BA in graphic design from central saint martins (1st class I'll have you know). I was asked to join the masters course but I didn't see any point in extending my study until there was something I really wanted to research. I was itching to get out there and design. Some of my friends went to the royal college but the graphics (communcation) course there has deteriorated into a pants illustration course now, so they went onto the interaction design masters which is very good.
