Hi everybody. I'm new to Newstoday ... live in Vancouver, BC, Canada ... and I'm having some design issues with a website I'm doing. Its still in its very primitive stages in Photoshop. I have a splash page (not posted yet) and this template - very rough - just for layout purposes. I'm hating the photos but need to keep with the them of piled photos. Comments? Please don't be too harsh - just some ideas! Thanks everybody.

welcome kelliot.
nice work on the site.
my only feeling it the top image feels a bit large and off balance.

welcome kelliott.
it's actually a quite nice concept. some minor tweeks are needed. like i know what you're trying to do on the left with the nav but it looks like it's just slapped over the white. give it some depth and make it really look like it's laying nicely over it.

I agree - but I can't seem to find a way to add depth to it. Any suggestions?

looks great overall, maybe just a bit design time and it is close to finished.

Does anyone else have a really hard time liking ANYTHING they design? I'm so self conscious about my work ...

I like you

very nice, kelliot...
the top image feels squashed for some reason...
... and as far as being self-conscious about your work...
... read this article and find some balance. :) Remember it's 'work' you're designing... it's not supposed to have the meaning of life or be perfect in 'your' eyes...
... only the clients. :)
(sorry for the scanned pdf)

not liking anything you do is normal perfectionist behaviour

i'd agree with sherman.. scale of photos a bit too big.
i'd consider shifting them over to the left a few so that the bottom left corner also sits outside on the red.
also... i know you're going for a "stacked" look but i find that rotated photos with obvious horizon lines look awkward, specially against the horizontal in BG. maybe don't rotate the stack so much?
also looks like they're slightly skewed which doesn't look natural.

main and haistings represent.

Yeah - they are really squished and demented right now - just trying to get sizing and general layout. I'm just uncomfortable with the whole design - although the client loves it and already approved it.

lolzzzzzzzz...
... then what are you doing asking us for a critique?!!
Finish the damn thing, get paid and go do something for yourself that'll satisfy your heart... I guarantee it'll be 'rare' that you get that feeling from a client project..
... unless you focus on the client's happiness... and not your own. (very difficult thing to do)

Ok ... good point ...
BUT
I've been working at a design firm for 3 years straight out of school and this is my first big freelance job I've landed and I really want it to look good. Just being a perfectionist I guess ... u know ...
