Basically it's religion because it says that there are no natural explainations for life on earth. At it's core, it says science is ill equipped to explain reality. Most scientists who oppose ID take a more "New Light" stand point, claiming that there are natural explainations that we don;t ahve knowledge of yet, instead of assuming supernatural causation.

Mimio: ID does not say that there are not natural explanations for life on earth. This is a canard of the first order. Many ID proponents believe it is alien life somewhere else in the universe who seeded the earth with the first protocell (panspermia). ID does not demand a supernatural entity. This is simply a canard that the opponents of ID keep trying push.
The "New Light" position is what I like to call: "Darwin of the Gaps". It's used by people who simply don't want to admit a design inference in these patterns we observe.

it's odd. people should be more than happy to look at both sides.
doesn't make sense to me.

Discipler, I'm sorry, how does any of that mean that there is a natural explaination? How is that in any way superior science to say that Aliens created us, or a supernatural being did? Since there's no evidence of either.

Hmm....that's what I thought.
Let's keep the aliens and/or supernatural beings out of the school textbooks.

ok so life was created by God and or aliens? i'm not against people learning about it but it seems closer to philosophy than practical science.

Mimio & vespa: What is your definition of "natural"? There is not a shred of evidence that unguided Darwinian mechanisms generated life on this planet. There is not even evidence that those mechanisms were responsible for past speciation either. Rather, the evidence points to teleology. Who or what the telic being or beings are/were, is a second order philosophical question. ID is not trying to answer that question. ID is simply pointing out that the digital code, information content, cellular machinery, fossil record, etc... defies a Darwinian explanation and that students should know this.

Anyway, I posted in this thread today because I though judge Jones's lack of integrity would fit well under this topic.
