I heard that his new album 'the information' wont be allowed to enter the charts because his DIY packging is considered as an unfair advantage? Is this true.
- Dirty_Deluxe0
Yes - in UK.
- moth0
I believe so.
You'd think that quality music would put him at an unfair advantage over most of the toss in the UK charts.
I'm sure he's not that upset.
- republik80
In terms of musis, it's a crap album anyway.
- Concrete0
That is massively gay!
I know I have purchased a CD before just for the way it looks but that shouldn't be an 'unfair advantage'
The Pete Waterman's of this world should be shot!
- mr_snuggles0
quality?
c'mon moth...
1 good song, a couple of nice texts. Why can't he just stick to singing?
- moth0
quality compared to the other shite i mean.
I agree that this album isn't particually good.
- mr_snuggles0
I must admit that I've only recently started listening to him, the only albums I really like are Sea Change and Mutations....

I haven't heard all of it and what I have heard isn't up to the standard of midnight vultures etc. But, he manages to bring different genres together and make a sound like noone else out there. I respect that.
- moth0
he's consistently on a level - like bowie. You can never call it 'bad'.
I'd say the only low points are this one and odelay (over played i think).
Mutations is the muts nuts though.
- jamble0
I dunno about that necessarily being good though concrete. I can make a sound like no one else out there but that doesn't make it good.
I think Beck's stuff in gerneal has gone a little downhill in recent years.

and all his old accoustic stuff is great. there's some great bootleg stuff floating around too. He's quite prolific.
- mr_snuggles0
he's a great song writer, but he definitely isn't unique in genre-blending, especially these days...
and what's the need for it?
- moth0
what's the need for it?
What music?
Come on snuggles...Just think how dull the world was pre "Men who don't fuck me are cowards!"
- whippits0
no one liked mutations at first
one foot in the grave is ribbingly funny
information is like a big extension cord running from guero thru nigel godrich and...
anyway this is what happens when no one tells you "no" anymore

I wonder what the designers 'Big Active' think about this, you could say it's a compliment to their design skills - but I'm sure they intended to sell the product, not alienate it...
- mr_snuggles0
the need for the genre blending... or whatever you wanna call it...
pick a lane...
- moth0
I'd like to think genres don't exist in my world - except what i like, and don't like.

The album is actually very good imo. I can listen to it constantly, finding new nuances all the time.. and couldn't point a bad song on it. I saw Beck a few weeks ago with Radiohead, the band seemed a little as if they were warming up before the album release. One of the bandmembers hardly played anything, just jumped around, singing very scarcely. I had a weird feeling having a lazy bum like that on full wage was bad for the band morale :)
They also had puppeteers with a small stage, with puppets mimicking the band. The video displays were showing puppets, rather than the band, that was cool. Then, during a break, they showed a short video of puppets' adventures earlier that day in Dublin, including them fucking up Radiohead's hotel room. It was hillarious and even included the puppets singing "with or without you". I heard everyone around saying that was the best part of the gig so far, which obviously exposed how weak the performance had been. Then they continued to play and it got much much better from there..

I came to The Information with little knowledge about Beck or his previous work.
It's a boring album....simple as that.
- whippits0
so what was your point rafalski? sorry I couldn't tell if you were talking about beck's band or radiohead.
beck showed us all that you could rap badly to country music and still pull it off we like music that we can identify with this way. like we could pull it off ourselves.
(see my blog about how i think bush is president in the same connection.)
