I would like to know too.
but, there are a lot of people replying, but only one answer looks like is backing up it's choice:
30D - better noise handling at high ISO settings
ok_not_ok
(Jan 10 07, 13:13)So I could just say:
30d, I like cherryor
D80, wood
getting feedback from photographers that have actually used both in similar settings would be great help here.

(Jan 10 07, 13:13)Not only that.
Canon's own CMOS sensors deliver better image material than Sony's CCD sensors (used in Sony, Konica-Minolta, Nikon, Pentax, Samsung cams). There is much more room for image manipulation in CMOS images, even JPG's are richer. This is particularly visible in dark, shaded areas of images. Using shadows/highlights in Photoshop you can bring quite a lot of information from dark areas, whereas in CCD images these areas are much noisier.I like handheld nightshots and I want 3 things from a dslr:
- image quality (low noise),
- optical stabilization,
- fast and sensitive AF (even in low light).Sony & Pentax (aka Samsung) have in-body stabilizers.
Nikon & Canon only have in-lens stabilizers, a very expensive solution. For me, Nikon doesn't cut it: uses CCD and has no in-body stabilization.
Also, good Nikon lenses are ridiculously expensive, more than Canon I suppose. But then, your approach might differ. Be sure to take the cameras in your hands, check out ergonomics, how they feel, listen if the shutter sounds pleasing to you. Play with test images.
Consider lens cost: read lens reviews, ie http://fredmiranda.com/

thanks rafalski, I consider that answer 2!

both good, I prefer the 30D, I shoot a lot of motor sport so the 5fps continuous shooting on the 30D over the 3fps on the D80 is a big factor.

There are good deals on 30d now, like €150 mail-in in Europe, prolly something in the US as well.
New model is coming soon..
