I like Akkurat...
whats wrong with it?

Akkurat is great. I'm beefing with Akzidenz. I was suggesting a worldwide replacement of Akzidenz w/ Akkurat. Savvy?

I would love to use Gotham rather than Helv, but that was my point - if you're doing mail outs for some shitey company and the budget is feckin zero, you have Helv in your fonts folder and you go to your client/art director and asy. "yo man I'd rather use Gotham for this, its much nicer and far less ubiquitous, oh and it only costs about 250 sterling for the set" the answer you will receive 9 times out of 10 will be:
"bog off and use Helv then"

(Oct 10 06, 08:46)True. But thankfully I have Gotham! Too bad everyone and their mother already stipulates Helvetica in their brand manual...

it's not laziness or lack of creativity.
helvitca is just the perfect standard font. just like anything - cars, bicycles, houses - there's always more exciting/experimental/appropriat... designs out there, but on the other hand there's that standard design that works well in most situations, so of course that's the most popular one.

aw come on cut it out.
what other than personal preference dictates the usage of one over the other besides whether or not u have it and cost?

Using HN is practically a religion!
Check these whores out!
Nice work, just the same old ubiquitous, generic type.
Dare to be different damn it!

(Oct 10 06, 08:57)Fonts carry personality, whether you or any other marketing guy can tell the difference or not. They usually communicate on a subliminal level. Just because you can't see a difference doesn't mean that schooling oneself in typography is a waste of time.

Then again, talking about type with non-designers is a bit like talking about philosophy with a brick.
No offense.
- gramme0
...'tis also a useless exercise.
Peace.

I prefer AG's 2 to helvetica's R

Gotham I really like the look of because it reflects lots of aspects of various sans' I've always liked - its got helv in there, but I think its more pleasently geometric and reminds me of bits of futura and bits of avant garde, two fonts I've never been happy with either the full character set of or the full set of faces.
that's why I'm getting gramme to send me it.
for my fonts collection, that is.
not commercial reasons.
