I'll be redoing my site within the next month. The main question I have is: Is this too gimicky? I know there seems to be this fad with very sterile websites and painfully simple navigation, but shouldn't a site of your work have a lil character. Any outside advice would rock!

I like the idea.
One thing though. When I select the first dot on the far left, the alternate view icon appears at the far right of the map.
Mac Firefox.

I'd stay away from designs that require explanations.
Actually, I'd stay away from any single dot or pixel in a portfolio that doesn't do or mean anything to/for the portfolio. I prefer work that can stand alone on just a blank page/paper. But that is just me.
Not saying it looks bad. But consider the people who are going to go through your portfolio. Those are the guys you're making it for, right?

I do agree the the site might not be the easiest to navigate, you might want to redo it.
